WRIGHT TWP. — In a battle of divisional unbeatens on all sides, the Crestwood boys and girls track teams delivered impressive performances in a sweep of Hazleton Area on Tuesday.
Only an additional half point scored by the Crestwood girls kept the two scores from being identical: the Comet boys defeated Hazleton Area 87-63; the girls won their side of the meet 87.5-62.5.
It was a successful senior day for the Comets, with a pregame ceremony honoring the handful of Crestwood athletes competing in the final home dual meet of their careers.
Both competitions were tight throughout. On the boys side, Crestwood won five of the final seven scored events to put some separation between themselves and the Cougars.
Crestwood boasted several two-time winners in the boys meet, including each member of their first-place 400 meter relay team.
Jaden Shedlock, who ran the anchor leg of the 400 relay to seal a win in that race, set a blistering time of 10.8 seconds in the 100 meter dash to pick up some crucial points for the Comets.
The other members of the relay also found success in other events. George Jennings won the 200-meter dash late in the meet, Raymer Tejeda won the high jump and Ricardo Williams cleared the second-place finisher by over three feet to win the long jump.
Hazleton Area’s Joseph Mazaika turned in the single strongest performance of the meet, winning first place in the 110 hurdles, the 300 hurdles and as part of the Cougars’ 1600 meter relay team.
The Crestwood girls won 11 of 18 events to clinch their side of the meet, with particular success in the middle and long distance events.
Ellie Kozich won the 3200 meter run and helped the Comets win in the 3200 meter relay; her sister Maggie won first place in the 1600 meter run.
Kayla Kresge won first place in both the 100 hurdles and the 300 hurdles, just edging out teammates Bianca Long and Olivia Jolie in the latter.
Gabriella Bredbenner was the leading point-getter for the Hazleton Area girls, winning the 100 dash and 200 dash.
