A layup from Zubair Lee with just under two minutes left put Eastern ahead for good, outlasting the Misericordia mens basketball team 67-66 to hand the Cougars their first loss of the season.

Lee put Eastern ahead 63-62 with 1:58 to play, and scored another layup with 1:13 to go to extend the lead to 65-62. The Cougars cut the lead to one point with three seconds left, but ran out of time to try and complete the comeback.

Kevin Lazdowsky had a game-high 29 points to lead the Cougars, who fall to 5-1.

Catholic 89, Wilkes 47

The Colonels suffered their first defeat of the season in a rout on the road.

Catholic University led by 31 points at half, and doubled the amount of field goals made by Wilkes.

Enzo Sechi led all scorers with 20 points. For Wilkes, Trent Fisher scored 19 points and finished just one rebound shy of a double-double, with nine boards.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Misericordia 65, Salisbury 50

A balanced offensive effort led the Cougars to victory over Salisbury.

Alyssa Bondi and Chloe Captoni each scored 13 points, two of four Misericordia players in double figures. Jocelyn Grosch and Skylar Bianchi added 12 and 10 points, respectively.

King’s 64, Marywood 45

The Monarchs snapped a four-game losing streak with a win at Marywood, using a 22-7 advantage in the third quarter to break the game wide open.

King’s had three scorers in double-figures, led by Brenna Costello with 14 points. Kathy Shepherd added 12 points, and Gianna Dickson had 11.

Catholic 78, Wilkes 49

Turnovers and offensive rebounds bit the Colonels hard in Saturday’s loss.

Wilkes committed 26 turnovers and gave up 20 offensive rebounds to the Cardinals, who got ahead early and continued to build their lead all the way to the final whistle.

Yamirelis Matos scored 20 points to lead the Colonels in defeat. Catholic University was led by Keegan Douglas, with 17 points.

MENS HOCKEY

Wilkes 4, Chatham 0

Four different Colonels scored as Wilkes improved to 7-3-0 (5-2-0 UCHC) with a win over Chatham.

Goals were scored by Nick Swain, Cam Lowe, Matt Carlson and Jimmy O’Kane. Michael Paterson-Jones made 36 saves for the Colonels.

WOMENS HOCKEY

Wilkes 4, Lebanon Valley 0

Wilkes wrapped up a weekend sweep of Lebanon Valley with a win on Saturday.

Haylee Bouchard, Abigail Barcless, Jordan Ferry and Julie Patterson all scored for the Colonels, who improved to 6-4-1 and 4-4-1 in conference play with the win.

WRESTLING

King’s takes eighth

The Monarchs had five wrestlers make the podium at the end of the two-day Messiah Petrofes Invitational.

Shane Kibler and Richard Fronheiser led the way with third-place finishes at 149 and 197 pounds, respectively. Martin Turi finished sixth at 149 pounds, Connor Wrobleski took seventh at 184 pounds and Hugh Bittenbender earned an eighth-place finish at 141 pounds.
