EXETER — An undefeated run through the Wyoming Valley Conference for the Wyoming Seminary golf team was capped off in a major way on Friday: with a conference crown.

Nick Werner led the entire field with a five-under-par 66, and the Blue Knights ran away from defending champs Lake-Lehman to win the Class 2A WVC team championship at Fox Hill Country Club.

The Blue Knights enjoyed a ton of success in 2023, with Werner and Anna Zapletalova winning district titles and Werner going on to win the state championship, but couldn’t add a team title to the trophy case.

This year, in a rematch from last year’s conference title match, Seminary wouldn’t be denied. Werner’s 66 gave the Blue Knights some cushion, Zapletalova had the second-best round of the day with a 75 and the Blue Knights got the golf postseason started with a victory.

“It feels great, we’re happy to get the win today,” Wyoming Seminary coach Matt Occhiato said. “It was a complete team effort, everyone did their job.”

Ayden Wilkinson shot a 78, and JP Hay rounded out the qualifying scorers for the Blue Knights with an 84.

It was a hot start to what figures to be another deep postseason run for Werner, who had many spectators around Fox Hill marveling at his skill with the putter.

Werner made the turn at 33, and carded a matching 33 on the back nine to clear the rest of the field by nine strokes, giving Seminary a massive edge.

“The putter was great today, I was feeling confident over the ball and I was lucky to roll in some putts,” Werner said. “I wasn’t trying to do anything fancy today, I was trying to play consistent golf.”

“Nick makes being a coach so much easier,” Occhiato said. “Everytime you come up to the green, you know which ball is his.”

Charlie Weidner led Lake-Lehman with a score of 76, with AJ Borchert a stroke behind at 77. Jackson Norconk improved on his front-nine score of 43 by four strokes on the back to finish with an 82, and Jack Kashatus finished with an 85 for the Black Knights.

Wyoming Seminary’s team record improved to 15-0, and the Blue Knights end their conference season with a perfect record and a conference title.

Next up for the Blue Knights will be the District 2 Class 2A team championship, to be played at Fox Hill on Oct. 4, with a 9 a.m. shotgun start. Their opponent has not yet been determined.
