Ashton Karlick found the end zone for two rushing touchdowns in the first quarter and Hazleton Area’s took things from there.

The Cougars came through with a 34-7 victory over Wyoming Valley West on Friday night at Harman Geist Stadium for their third straight win after an 0-2 start.

Hunter Johnson also found the end zone for Hazleton Area, which led 21-0 at halftime. It was the first home win of the season for the Cougars, who opened the year with non-conference losses to Nazareth and Williamsport.

Hazleton Area has since beaten West Scranton and Berwick and has allowed just 20 points during the three-game win streak headed into a showdown with Wilkes-Barre Area next week.

Valley West fell to 0-5 and was held to seven points for the third straight week.

The Spartans return home next week to host Executive Education Academy from Allentown in a non-conference matchup.

BERWICK 48, HANOVER AREA 6

The Bulldogs got a much needed boost for their offense on Friday night.

After scoring just 24 total points in the first four weeks of the season, Berwick erupted for a decisive victory over the Hawkeyes at Crispin Field to earn the first win under coach CJ Curry.

Ty’Meere Wilkerson had a breakout game in the backfield for the Dawgs (1-4), ripping off an early 68-yard touchdown run to get things started.

Wilkerson racked up three rushing touchdowns before halftime as Berwick raced out to a 35-0 lead at the break. Billy Hanson added two more scores on the ground.

Rocco Romeo added a touchdown in the second half for the Dawgs, who had the shutout spoiled by a late touchdown pass by the Hawkeyes (0-5).

Berwick travels to Wyoming Area next Friday while Hanover Area hosts Tunkhannock.
