The King’s rushing attack found success all day long against Alvernia, rushing for 251 yards as a team in a 35-10 road win over the Golden Wolves on Saturday.

Running back Brennan Robinson led the way with 139 yards and a touchdown on the ground, adding another touchdown as a pass-catcher from quarterback Russell Minor-Shaw.

Minor-Shaw flashed his dual-threat ability as well, throwing for 209 yards and two touchdowns and running for 74 yards and another score.

The game was scoreless through one quarter, but the Monarchs on the very first play of the second quarter. Minor-Shaw found Robinson for a 19-yard touchdown to put King’s ahead.

The Monarchs would stretch their lead out to 21-0 with Minor-Shaw connecting with Ryan McCombs for a score, and then running one in himself.

Alvernia got on the board with a safety late in the second quarter, and added a touchdown and two-point conversion before the end of the half to make it 21-10.

That was all the scoring for the Golden Wolves, as the King’s defense pitched a shutout in the second half. Touchdown runs from Robinson and Jayon Hailey provided some cushion for the Monarchs on their way to the win.

King’s improved to 2-1 (2-0 MAC Freedom) on the year, winning their last two after losing to Wilkes in the Mayor’s Cup to start the year.

The Monarchs will return to Wilkes-Barre for their Homecoming game next Saturday, hosting Widener University at 1 p.m. at McCarthy Stadium.

SUNY Brockport 31, Wilkes 10

Two fourth-quarter touchdowns helped SUNY Brockport pull away from the Colonels, handing Wilkes their second loss in a row.

With 14:01 left to play, Wilkes quarterback Xavier Powell connected with Justin Moore for 40 yards and a game-tying touchdown, bringing the score to 17-17.

SUNY Brockport had the answer on their next drive, which culminated in a Ben Gocella touchdown pass to Daniel Manneh to put the Golden Eagles ahead by a touchdown.

The Colonels had two chances to tie, but ran into turnover issues at the worst possible time. On the ensuing drive after the SUNY Brockport touchdown, Powell ripped off a long run but fumbled at the end of it, giving the ball back to the Golden Eagles.

Wilkes made a stop on defense to get the ball back, but a long drive was ended suddenly by a Golden Eagles pick-six, Powell’s pass on 4th and short picked off by Kyle Haettich and returned 93 yards for the final scoring play of the game.

Powell finished the game with 174 yards passing, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He was also the leading rusher for the Colonels, running for 102 of the team’s 107 total rushing yards.

Moore and Zane Grover each caught touchdown passes for the Colonels, while Juju Fears was the team’s leader in receiving yards with 72.

The Colonels drop to 1-2 with the loss, and will return home next weekend to host St. John Fisher on Homecoming weekend.
