Hallie Brown posted the best round of anybody on the course at Honesdale Country Club on Monday, helping Tunkhannock clear the field with room to spare and win the District 2 Class 2A girls golf team championship.
Tunkhannock won the championship with a three-member team score of 253, a good 25 shots clear of second-place Scranton Prep, who finished with a 278. In total, eight schools competed in the Class 2A tournament.
The Tigers were the only Wyoming Valley Conference team in the Class 2A field, but three strong scores from Brown, Jackie Martin and Megan Rickaby brought home the championship to Tunkhannock.
Brown and Martin had the two best rounds of anybody in the Class 2A competition, with Brown carding a 75 and Martin shooting an 87. Rickaby rounded out the scoring for Tunkhannock with a 91.
In the four-school Class 3A team championship, Abington Heights won the title with a team score of 269. North Pocono took second with a 283, and Lyla Jones shot a 79 to card the lowest individual score of the competition for the Trojans.
Hazleton Area, the lone WVC team in the Class 3A competition, finished in third place with a 294, coming in ahead of fourth-place Valley View.
Gia Rainey led the Cougars with an 88. Maddison Matteo followed up with a 97, and Kayla Wysocky rounded out the scoring for Hazleton Area with a 109.
Tunkhannock and Abington Heights will both advance to the PIAA girls golf team championships, scheduled for Oct. 23 at Penn State University.
