As the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Mavericks continue to fill out their roster ahead of their inaugural Arena Football One season, they didn’t have to go far for their latest signing.
The Mavericks announced on Thursday that they’ve signed Misericordia graduate assistant Mahlon Slaughter to their active roster.
Slaughter, who played linebacker at Division II schools Malone University in Ohio and Northwood University in Michigan before joining the Cougars’ coaching staff, was signed following the Mavericks’ open tryout held on Jan. 4 at Misericordia’s Brassington Dome.
”When I saw the tryout, I decided to take a chance. I’m so thankful I did,” Slaughter said. “I’m excited to share this experience with the players I coach, and I know they’ll be out there supporting me. I want to be a professional coach, and this is a great opportunity for growth.”
“We were excited to watch Mahlon play at our open tryout on Saturday and even more excited to learn his backstory,” Mavericks owner Matt Rowland said.
“We want the Mavericks to be a huge part of our community and the opportunity to showcase talent from Misericordia not only gives us the chance to put a great player on the field, but the fans a name to cheer for.”
The Mavericks will kick off the 2025 season on the weekend of March 14-16, taking on the Nashville Kats.
