Gunner Giza and Jacob Fine combined on a one-hit shutout as Wyoming Valley West baseball earned a 13-0 non-conference victory over Carbondale in five innings on Tuesday.
Giza went four innings for the win, giving up just one hit and one walk while striking out six. Fine struck out two to seal the shutout in the fifth after the Spartans scored seven runs in the bottom of the fourth to end the game early.
Seven different Valley West players had a hit with D’Vonte Rivers leading the way with a double and three RBI. Giza (RBI) and Jacob Stevens also doubled while Damien Eastmen drove in two runs.
Wilkes-Barre Area 15, Pottsville 5
Alex Hufford finished 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs to power Wilkes-Barre Area to a non-conference win in six innings.
An early 3-0 lead for the Wolfpack turned into a 5-3 deficit as Pottsville scored five unearned runs in the home half of the first.
Those were the only runs of the day for the Crimson Tide as Wolpack starter Nathan Fritz and reliever Kolton Davies pitched five shutout innings after that. Fritz got the win, allowing three hits and three walks while striking out five.
Wilkes-Barre Area was in rhythm at the plate, pounding out 16 hits. James Bottger (double) also had three hits while Fritz (two RBI), Jake Howe (two RBI), Derrick Nah (three RBI) and Avery Cour (double) all had two apiece.

The Bulldogs earned a 25-8, 25-10, 25-12 sweep of the Eagles to open the season.
Sage Bankes (7 aces, 18 service points 5 kills), Jayden Charles (7 aces, 14 service points, 3 digs), Carlos Guzman (6 kills), Jackson Matash (17 assists), Rocco Romeo (5 kills) and Gavin Jones (5 digs) led the effort.
