Dallas senior Madison Hedglin beat a field of 59 runners to win the girls 3200-meter run title Saturday in the Jack Roddick Track and Field Invitational at Shippensburg University.
Hedglin covered the distance in 10:48.55 to beat Bedford’s Chloe May by 4.6 seconds.
Dallas girls were prominent when athletes from 111 schools around the state descended on Shippensburg to test themselves against top competition and familiarize themselves with the site of the PIAA Championships. Shippensburg hosts the state meet on Memorial Day weekend each year.
The Dallas girls had five finishes in the top five, including three by Julia Natitus.
Natitus took second in both hurdles races, finishing the 100 in 14.64 seconds and the 300 in 44.76, and was fifth in the 100 dash in 12.42.
Morgan Langdon from Dallas was third in the shot put with 37-7½.
The Hazleton Area boys, both Wyoming Area teams and both Northwest teams also had athletes finish in the top six at the meet.
Franklin Ritz led Hazleton Area, taking second in the 800 in 1:58.48. Owen Pollock was sixth in the 400 in 50.58 and the 1600 relay team placed eighth.
Wyoming Area had high finishes in both triple jumps. Taylor Gashi was third among girls with 37-8¾ and Luke Kopetchny was sixth among boys with 43-5¼.
Northwest got fourth-place finishes from Michael Fritz in the boys 3200 in 9:28.65 and Jordin Bowen in the girls high jump with 5-4.
RED & BLACK INVITATIONAL
Wilkes-Barre Area boys sprinters put on a show Saturday in the 14th annual Red & Black Invitational at East Stroudsburg University.
Timothy Leonard and Kevon Creech finished 1-2 out of 98 entries in the 100-meter dash and were part of the winning 400 relay team.
The sprinters helped the Wolfpack compile 60 team points and finish third out of the 27 teams that scored in the meet.
Juvell Williams and Robert Miller were the other members of the relay team that finished in 42.36 to win by more than a second over the rest of the 25 entries in the event.
Leonard won the 100 in 10.59.
Creech was second in both the 100, in 10.90, and 200, in 21.84.
The Wolfpack also got a win from Da’von Underwood in the long jump with 22-10¾. He was second in the high jump, clearing 6-0.
Jaziah McCoy was third in the 400 in 50.21.
The Wilkes-Barre Area girls 3200 relay team placed second.
Dallas had runners entered in meets in two different locations.
Sarah Williams led the way at East Stroudsburg, taking second in the 3200 in 11:41.06.
Two Wyoming Valley Conference javelin throwers — Tunkhannock’s Caden Newswanger and Nanticoke’s Kate Reed — placed fourth.
