SCRANTON — Timothy Leonard began Day Two of the District 2 Track and Field Championships by sprinting to personal glory.
With a big assist from his sidekick, Kevon Creech, Leonard wrapped up the meet by delivering a Class 3A boys team title to Wilkes-Barre Area at Memorial Stadium Tuesday night.
Leonard won the 100-meter dash in record time, took the baton from Creech to finish off a 400-meter relay win, finished four-thousandths behind Creech’s win in the 200 dash, then held off 400 champion Owen Pollock of Hazleton Area on the final leg of the 1600 relay to lead a second-place finish in the event.
Leonard’s time of 10.60 seconds, broke the 30-year-old meet record of state champion John Dessoye from Pittston Area, who ran 10.64.
“From the jump, I felt like I was about to take it,” Leonard said. “I was thinking: ‘Please no rain; please no head wind’.”
The wind eventually came along with some light rain, but nothing was stopping Leonard and Creech.
The Wolfpack needed to finish in front of Hazleton Area in the final 1600 relay to win the team championship.
Creech got things started, Rajan Watson and Jaziah McCoy followed, then Leonard wrapped up for a second-place finish in 3:25.34, less than a second behind Wallenpaupack.
“We knew they going to run it; we knew from back at the first day when we started,” Wilkes-Barre Area coach Paul McGrane said of the 100- and 200-meter specialists extending themselves to 400-meter legs. “They didn’t want to run it. It took a while to get right lineup.
“ … We moved a little bit around. We have a good guy out in front. We have a heavy hammer in Timmy. And, our two middle guys, Rajan and Jaziah, they did a nice job.”
The second-place relay finish, with Hazleton Area in fourth, left the Wolfpack ahead of the Cougars 96-94.
“We followed it the whole way,” McGrane said of the tight multi-team points race.
The Wyoming Valley Conference had four of the top six Class 3A boys teams with Crestwood and Wyoming Area tied for third at 58 points.
While Leonard was winning the 100 in 10.60, Creech was hitting the state qualifying standard on the nose, taking second in 10.95 to land a spot in the PIAA Championships May 23-24 at Shippensburg University.
Creech edged Leonard, 21.934-21.938, in the 200 with Leonard also making the state standard.
Juvell Williams and Robert Miller started the 400 relay win that Creech and Leonard finished.
Da’von Underwood won the long jump for the Wolfpack with 22-3½.
Pollock’s 400-meter win was in 50.04 with Pittston Area’s Jalen Moore taking second.
The 800 also ended with Hazleton Area in first and Pittston Area in second. Franklin Ritz won in 1:58.26. Caden Boettger took the silver.
Hunter Pitcavage from Dallas threw the javelin to 186-5 to finish first in an event where the top 10 were all from the WVC.
Crestwood’s Mason Staude nearly followed up his 1600 win from Monday. He led most of the way in the 800 before being edged by Janowicz in five-hundredths of a second.
CLASS 2A
The Cronin twins, sophomores Bodhi and Finn, led Lake-Lehman to a strong third-place finish.
Mid Valley won with 91¼ points. Dunmore had 88 points to beat Lake-Lehman by one.
Bodhi Cronin won the 400, Finn Cronin won the 800 and both were part of the 1600 relay win.
When the day started, Bodhi Cronin was the top seed and thought his best shot was in the triple jump. He led into the fifth of six attempts before Kevin Vincent of Holy Cross passed him and he also fell one-quarter inch short of the state qualifying standard with 43-11¾.
“I really just tried to forget it about because that was putting me down,” Bodhi Cronin said of how he bounced back for the surprising win over Dunmore’s Tommy Clark in the 400.
Finn Cronin also took out one of the Lackawanna Track Conference’s most established runners beating 1600 and 3200 champion Kendel Jones of Elk Lake by two seconds in the 800.
Miller Mattie added another win for Lake-Lehman when he edged Jacoby Paroby of Holy Cross by one-hundredth of a second.
Andrew Chase from Holy Redeemer won the shot put.
