SHIPPENSBURG — Nanticoke Area’s Nevaeh Baran finished alone in fourth place in the Class 3A girls triple jump to lead Wyoming Valley Conference efforts in the PIAA Track and Field Championships Friday, the first of two days of competition at Shippensburg University.
Hazleton Area’s Darren Seiwell was part of a tie for fourth, Hazleton Area’s Sophia Shults joined Baran as triple jump medalists and Dallas hurdler Julia Natitus qualified for Saturday’s finals in two events.
Wilkes-Barre Area’s Timothy Leonard, the top seed in the Class 3A boys 100-meter dash, barely claimed the last spot in the final, finishing eighth in qualifying and making it by less than one-hundredth of a second.
Holy Redeemer’s Kacy Miller won the para boys shot put gold medal, beating West Perry’s Hayden Quaker head-to-head by more than 10 feet.
Baran, who went in as the second seed, jumped 39-2¼ on her final try of the preliminary round, settling into fourth place where she stayed throughout the additional three jumps. All six of her jumps covered at least 37-11½.
Shults took eighth with 38-0½, also on her third try.
Seiwell cleared 14 feet to tie for fourth with two of the other three pole vaulters who cleared that height, but could not go any higher.
Natitus just needs to complete her two races Saturday to come home with two medals in Class 3A girls. She put herself in title contention in the 300 by qualifying second in 42.91, behind only Garnet Valley’s Felicia Grimmelbein, who posted a 42.75. Natitus was also sixth in 100 hurdles qualifying in 14.47.
Leonard ran the 100 in 10.80 after setting the District 2 Class 3A record last week with a 10.60. He just missed becoming a two-event finalist, placing 11th out of 34, who were pursuing the eight finalist berths in he 200 when he clocked in at 22.09.
The top eight in each event earned medals and scored points.
Lake-Lehman just missed in the Class 2A boys 1600 relay finishing ninth, 57-hundredths of a second out of a medal.
Miller won the para shot put with 34-0, beating Quaker’s 23-6.
