Trea Turner hit a leadoff homer and added two singles as the Philadelphia Phillies extended their winning streak to five games with a 5-2 victory over the Miami Marlins on Monday night in the opener of a four-game series.
Max Kepler also went deep and Alec Bohm had two hits and two RBIs for the Phillies.
Rookie Mick Abel (2-0) threw five innings of one-run ball in his fourth major league start. The 23-year-old right-hander scattered three hits and struck out three. Orion Kerkering closed with a perfect ninth for his first career save.
Kepler snapped a 1-all tie with a solo blast in the fourth. He drove a slider from Miami starter Sandy Alcántara into the seats in right field for his ninth of the season.
Turner’s RBI single in the seventh made it 3-1 before Miami narrowed the deficit on a sacrifice fly Agustín Ramírez in the eighth.
Philadelphia padded its lead in the ninth on Bohm’s two-run single.
Angels 1, Yankees 0 (11 inn.)
Nolan Schanuel’s RBI double in the top of the eleventh broke a scoreless tie and gave the Angels the only run needed in a win over the Yankees.
The loss marks the second straight shutout loss for the Yankees, who got 7.2 scoreless innings from starter Clarke Schmidt but were ineffective at the plate against Angels starter Jose Soriano.
After Schanuel gave Los Angeles the lead in the top half of the 11th, the Yankees had a chance to tie or even win the game in the home half.
After Aaron Judge was intentionally walked to start the inning, Jazz Chisholm singled to load the bases with two outs. Anthony Volpe hit a routine grounder to third base to end the game.
Soriano threw seven scoreless innings for the Angels, followed by four scoreless innings in relief thrown by five Angels relievers.
Ryan Zeferjahn was credited with the win for Los Angeles, while Jonathan Loasiga wore the loss for the Yankees.
Rockies 6, Nationals 4
Hunter Goodman homered twice, including a tying shot in the ninth inning, and then Mickey Moniak connected for a two-run drive that gave the Colorado Rockies a 6-4 victory over the skidding Washington Nationals on Monday night.
Colorado entered with 57 losses this season, tied with the 1932 Boston Red Sox for the most in the modern era (since 1901) through 71 games. Both the Rockies and Red Sox won their 72nd game.
Washington has lost nine straight overall.
Goodman tied it 4-all with a solo shot to left-center — his 13th homer of the season to lead National League catchers.
Moniak, who tripled in the fifth and scored on Michael Toglia’s single for a 3-1 lead, sent a two-run homer into the bullpen in right field to put Colorado ahead with his eighth home run this season.
