PLAINS TWP. — Two traditional powers controlled the top of the boys’ leaderboards after the opening day of the District 2 Wrestling Championships, while a Wyoming Valley Conference program sits in pole position in the girls’ tournament.
The Hazleton Area girls have a five-point lead over defending team champ Delaware Valley with the prelims and quarterfinals concluded, and semifinal action set to kick off the second and final day of wrestling on Saturday at Wilkes-Barre Area High School.
In Class 2A, three-time defending team champ Honesdale has opened up a lead over Hanover Area in the standings, while Wallenpaupack leads the way in Class 3A with Abington Heights and Pittston Area behind them.
Hazleton Area girls send eight to semis
After a third-place finish as a team last season, one that included the program’s first District 2 girls individual championship, the Cougars are in good shape to add some more gold on Saturday.
Eight Hazleton Area girls wrestlers have punched their ticket to the semifinal round, the most of any District 2 team.
The program’s first-ever district champion, Miah Molinaro, is among the group headed to the semis; Molinaro, the third seed in the 136-pound field, picked up two wins on Friday to secure her spot in the semifinals.
Among the rest of the Hazleton Area contingent are two top seeds, Shaniece Brown at 130 pounds and Evelyn Sheer at 235. Brown won two first period pinfalls on Friday, while Sheer has yet to wrestle in the four-person 235 tournament.
All of the WVC’s top seeds in the girls tournament made it to the semifinals: Crestwood’s Rachel Shoemaker (118) and Emma Selfe (136), Nanticoke Area’s Emily Kivler (112), Wyoming Area’s Martyna Bonning (142) and Wilkes-Barre Area’s Avah Jobarteh (190).
Shoemaker and Kivler are among the small group of reigning district champions from the WVC to still be in the mix, along with Nanticoke Area’s Sierra Ripka and Hanover Area’s Kaidence Ankner.
Hanover Area sits in third place with 52 points behind Delaware Valley, with Crestwood and Nanticoke Area tied for fourth place at 45 points.
With four spots for District 2 girls’ wrestlers in next weekend’s regional tournament, all semifinalists have already earned their spot.
This includes two-time District 2 champ and two-time state medalist Ripka, who booked her third trip to regionals without wrestling a match at 170 pounds on Friday.
Honesdale, Hanover Area duking it out in Class 2A
Honesdale’s got the inside track to a fourth straight district team title, but Hanover Area isn’t too far off.
Hanover Area sits in second place in Class 2A, with 64.5 points to Honesdale’s 87.
The Hawkeyes matched Honesdale with seven wrestlers through to the semifinals, including returning district champion CJ Caines.
Caines, who went further than any WVC wrestler in last year’s state tournament with a sixth-place finish as a freshman, received an auto-bye to the semifinals and will wrestle his first match of the tournament in tomorrow’s semifinals.
He’s joined by WVC champions Chase Smith and Gregory Vassallo in the semifinals from Hanover Area, along with Jace Thomas, Jeff Peck, Michael Perez and Nate Clime.
Of that group, Thomas had arguably the highlight match of the evening with his sudden victory decision over Montrose’s Delos Stone in the 133 quarterfinals.
Thomas didn’t score his first point of the match until the final minute of the third period, tying things 1-1, but scored a lightning-fast takedown in sudden victory to move on.
“It was a move I just started doing on my own,” Thomas said. “If they’re on their knees, I just drag them right through and take them down.”
Lake-Lehman and Dallas sit in third and fourth place, respectively. The Black Knights have five wrestlers in the semifinals, while Dallas has four.
Pittston Area trying to chase down leaders in Class 3A
Defending district champ Brody Spindler is one of eight semifinal-bound wrestlers for Pittston Area as the Patriots will try to catch up to Wallenpaupack and Abington Heights.
Spindler had just one match on Friday, scoring a pin in 1:18 over Ethan Osmanski of Wilkes-Barre Area in the 215 quarterfinals.
All four of Pittston Area’s conference champions from last month’s WVC meet reached the semifinals: David Krantz (107), Ethan Aftewicz (152) and Noah Gruber (215) all fought their way through to the semis.
They’re joined by Tibor Toth, Mikel Roman, Jahiem Butler and Chase Baron.
Toth, a 127-pounder who finished as runner-up for the conference champion Patriots last month, turned a dogfight into a major decision in his quarterfinal win.
He led by just a point heading to the final period but came out firing to earn a 12-4 win over Delaware Valley’s Andrew Elliott.
“The difference was choosing neutral and not going bottom,” Toth explained. “I had the confidence in neutral and I realized he was better off top, and I realized I could win from that position.”
Hazleton Area and Wilkes-Barre Area are tied for fourth place at 60.5 points and will both send seven wrestlers to the semifinal round.
Both schools count two reigning district champions in those groups: Jude Salko (133) and Mason Marolo (189) for the Cougars, Liam Evanko (160) and Gene Ardo (172) for the Wolfpack.
