A deep run for the Wyoming Seminary girls basketball team came to an end on Friday night, as the Blue Knights ran into defending Class 2A state champ Berlin Brothersvalley and were defeated 53-31 at Cumberland Valley High School in the Class 2A quarterfinals.
The Mountaineers pulled away in the second half after leading Sem by 10 heading into halftime. That lead grew to 19 at the end of the third quarter, and Wyoming Seminary didn’t have the offense to mount a comeback in the final eight minutes.
Ellie Kersey led the Blue Knights with nine points, including the team’s only three-pointer of the contest.
Ella Stambaugh and Stella Ruiz each added six points for Wyoming Seminary in the loss.
This was Wyoming Seminary’s first-ever appearance in the state quarterfinals for either their girls or boys’ basketball programs. The Blue Knights defeated Muncy in the first round and Marian Catholic in the second round, both in close games, to reach the quarters.
Coral Prosser had 16 points to lead Berlin Brothersvalley, the District 5 champions. Bryn Prosser added 12 points for the Mountaineers.
Berlin Brothersvalley will head back to the PIAA Class 2A semifinals on Monday. They’ll take on District 4 second seed Southern Columbia with a ticket to the state championship game on the line.
Southern Columbia defeated District 2 champion Mountain View in their quarterfinal matchup, winning 48-35 in a game held at Wilkes-Barre Area High School.
H.S. BOYS VOLLEYBALL
Abington Heights 3, Nanticoke Area 0
In the season opener for both teams, Abington Heights proved too tough for the Trojans to conquer.
Set scores were 25-22, 25-20 and 25-18 in favor of the Comets.
Zach Zubritski had eight kills and eight service points for Nanticoke Area. Brayden Isaacs had 17 assists and nine service points, and Ethan Yendrzeiwski added eight service points.
