SCRANTON — Nevaeh Baran had never jumped in track and field competition prior to the 2025 season.
In a little more than a year, the Nanticoke Area senior has now established herself as one of the top female jumpers in District 2 history.
Baran became the Wyoming Valley Conference’s only double-gold medalist in this season’s district championships when she added a long jump win Tuesday to Monday’s victory in the triple jump.
The latest winning effort came within three-quarters of an inch of the district’s Class 3A meet record in the long jump, set by Pittston Area’s Aria Messner two years ago, with a leap of 19-1¾.
Baran is one of just three 3A long jumpers in district history to post a jump measured at more than 19 feet.
And, it isn’t even her best event.
That would be the long jump where Baran set a meet record last season and added the second-best effort ever in Monday’s win when she went 39-11.
“I feel the most comfortable in triple,” said Baran, who was fourth in the state in at event last season and is setting her sights on gold May 22-23 at the PIAA Championships in Shippensburg. “Long, I think, takes me a little longer to work up to my best mark.”
Baran improved slightly on her second and third jumps. The third jump of the preliminary round wound up being the winner, but all four jumps Baran landed before fouling twice exceeded every other effort from the field by more than 16 inches.
Crestwood produced the day’s only other individual gold medal for the WVC as Lackawanna Track Conference teams won 19 of the 23 events decided and took both team titles.
Freshman Isla Centak and 2025 champion Madi Geiger finished first and third in the javelin to help the Comets produce 98 points and finish second in the 3A team standings, 12 points behind Abington Heights.
“Today my goal was to hit that 125 (feet) state mark,” Centak said, “but I still (hit a personal record), so I’m happy with what I did.”
A tiebreaker was needed to decide the 3A high jump title between two WVC girls.
Jaida Underwood of Wilkes-Barre Area won, but Grayce Grazio from Crestwood also made the state meet when both cleared 6-3.
Janesa Sancho from Wyoming Area met the qualifying standard while finishing second in the 100 hurdles. She helped the Warriors to third with 68 points.
The last girls event of the meet was won by Hazleton Area with a 1600-meter relay team of Ava Hinkle, Zoe Pollock, Sonia Diaz and Jayla Eberts.
The Cougars finished fifth with 60½ points.
Montrose won the 2A team title 125-97½ over Mid Valley, which got the meet’s top individual performance from Olivia Thomas.
Thomas, a freshman, crushed the existing meet record in the triple jump, anchored a 1600-relay win and won the 100 hurdles after setting a 2A record during Monday’s qualifying.
Lackawanna teams occupied the top four spots in the standings before Lake-Lehman finished fifth with 77 points.
