District 2 champion MMI Prep lost the lead in the top of the sixth, but tied it in the bottom of the inning and scored in the seventh to defeat District 3 runner-up Fairfield 13-12 Monday in a PIAA Class A first-round baseball game.

The Preppers (9-13) led 6-1 after two innings. They will play District 6 runner-up Homer Center (14-10) in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

Caleb Skuba led the MMI offense, going 2-for-4 with a triple and three RBI. Gavin Serock and Ben Drobnock were each 2-for-4 with an RBI. Ethan Ungemach also had an RBI.

Ben Gombeda, the last of four pitchers used, threw the final inning to get the win.

Marian Catholic 11, Wyoming Seminary 1

Wyoming Seminary’s run from the fourth seed to its first-ever District 2 championship came to an end at the hands of District 11 champion Marian Catholic.

Marian Catholic broke open the game in the fourth inning, scoring four times to post a five-inning victory in a PIAA Class 2A first-round game.

The Blue Knights (14-10) had just two hits. Neiko Ravaioli singled in Leo Nockley with their only run in the first. Ryan Finlay also had a single.

Marian Catholic’s Roman Bednarek pitched a complete game and help his cause at the plate. He homered and drove in four runs.

Noah Bauder and Jimmy Cannon each had two RBI for the Colts (20-4), who will play District 4 runner-up Southern Columbia (16-4) in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

Montoursville 11, Wyoming Area 1

District 4 champion Montoursville scored five times in the fourth inning and added five more in the sixth to defeat District 2 runner-up Wyoming Area in a Class 4A first-round game.

Wyoming Area ended its season at 19-5.

Logan Kirby pitched a complete game and limited Wyoming Area to two hits while striking out eight. Austin Davidson, Carson Menne and Elijah Eck all had two RBI.

SOFTBALL

D2 champions find success

All five District 2 champions in the PIAA state playoffs won Monday and surrendered a combined one run.

In Class A, Maria DeSantis drove in four runs as District 2 champion Holy Cross defeated District 4 champion Montgomery 9-1. Claire Helring had three hits.

In Class 2A, District 2 champion Montrose shut down previously unbeaten District 4 champion Northwest 5-0. Libby Bush had three hits and an RBI.

In Class 3A, District 2 champion Mid Valley edged District 4 runner-up Warrior Run 4-2 as Ava Hazelton struck out 15.

Abbey Mackey and Ariana Davey each had an RBI.

In Class 4A, District 2 and defending state champion Valley View defeated District 3 runner-up Northern Lebanon 5-0. Abbi Call struck out 13 and homered.

In Class 5A, District 2 champion Abington Heights defeated District 1 fourth seed Upper Moreland 6-0. Adrianna Condrad homered and had two RBI.

All five D2 champions play in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
