PITTSBURGH — Ryan O’Hearn hit three home runs and finished with a franchise-record 10 RBIs as the Pittsburgh Pirates drilled the Atlanta Braves 12-4 on Tuesday night.
The left-handed slugger hit his third career grand slam off Atlanta’s Hurston Waldrep (0-1) in the first, took Waldrep deep again for a three-run shot in the third and broke Johnny Rizzo’s 87-year-old franchise record for RBIs in a game by adding another three-run blast against reliever Connor Thomas in the sixth.
The first baseman, the rare free agent to sign a multiyear deal with the Pirates, made it easy for ace Paul Skenes (7-8) to pick up his first win in nearly two months as Pittsburgh won its third straight.
O’Hearn’s bid to become the 22nd player in major league history to hit four homers in a game ended when he singled off Atlanta infielder Jorge Mateo — making his third career appearance in relief — in the ninth. O’Hearn instead settled for being the 11th player since the RBI became an official statistic in 1920 to hit three homers and drive in 10 runs in a game. Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani was the last player to do it in 2024 against Miami.
Rays 6, Yankees 4
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Hunter Feduccia and Yandy Diaz hit consecutive home runs in the fourth inning, Ian Seymour struck out 12 and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the New York Yankees.
Victor Mesa Jr. also homered, and Richie Palacios had two hits, scored twice and drove in a run for the Rays, who extended their lead in the AL East over the Yankees to four games.
Seymour (6-1) allowed three runs on five hits without a walk in 5 1/3 innings. Bryan Baker worked a scoreless ninth for his 24th save.
The Yankees struck out 17 times against five Tampa Bay pitchers and became the first American League team whose batters struck out 17 times in consecutive nine-inning games. New York fanned 17 times in a 5-1 win over the Rays on Monday night.
Paul Goldschmidt and Jose Caballero each struck out four times. Goldschmidt is in an 0-for-30 slide. New York’s slumping offense had 11 hits, reaching double digits for the first time since June 17.
Trailing 3-2 in the fourth, the Rays scored four times off Will Warren (7-4). Palacios tied the game with an RBI double before Feduccia hit a two- homer to right-center. Diaz followed with his 13th homer of the season.
Tigers 6, Athletics 2
DETROIT — Tarik Skubal struck out nine over five innings and Colt Keith hit a two-run homer to lead the Detroit Tigers to a victory over the Athletics.
Skubal (5-4) struck out the side in the first inning for the second time in his career and left after 96 pitches. The left-hander allowed five hits and walked two. His only blemish came on rookie Henry Bolte’s third homer, a leadoff shot in the third that cut it to 2-1.
Kevin McGonigle, headed to the All-Star Game as a rookie, drew an eight-pitch walk from J.T. Ginn (7-5) leading off the first and Keith hit his next pitch for his seventh homer and a lead the Tigers never relinquished. Detroit (41-50) has won three straight and six of its last seven games.
Kyle Finnegan pitched a scoreless sixth following Skubal, and Drew Anderson allowed Shea Langeliers’ RBI single for an unearned run in the seventh. Jacob Waguespack closed it out with two perfect innings.
Astros 6, Nationals 3
WASHINGTON — Jose Altuve homered, Nick Allen drove in a season-high three runs and the Houston Astros beat the Washington Nationals.
Christian Vázquez drove in two for Houston, which has won three of four.
James Wood hit his 25th home run for Washington, which lost for the third time in four games. The Nationals left 11 men on base and were 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position.
Houston trailed 2-1 before a three-run fourth inning against Andrew Alvarez. After the Astros loaded the bases with one out, Allen slapped a two-run single to left. After Brice Matthews and Allen executed a double steal, Matthews scored on Vázquez’s sacrifice fly.
Brewers 4, Cardinals 3
ST. LOUIS — Jacob Misiorowski struck out 11 in seven strong innings, Christian Yelich drove in a pair of runs and the Milwaukee Brewers rallied to beat the St. Louis Cardinals in the first game of a split doubleheadery.
Misiorowski (10-4) allowed three hits, including a pair of homers, and didn’t walk a batter. The 24-year-old right-hander threw 57 of his 103 pitches at 100 mph or more. It’s the third time this season he has thrown at least 57 pitches 100 mph or more.
Aaron Ashby pitched a scoreless eighth and Abner Uribe earned his sixth save in eight opportunities as the Brewers won their third straight.
Jordan Walker hit a two-run homer in the first inning for the Cardinals, and Iván Herrera added a solo shot in the third.
Joey Ortiz’s double got the Brewers on the board and Yelich followed with an RBI single to tie it at 2 in the third inning. Garrett Mitchell’s RBI single pulled the Brewers even at 3-all in the sixth. Yelich’s RBI double off JoJo Romero broke a 3-all tie in the seventh.
Walker’s 21st homer of the season left his bat at 105.6 mph, according to Statcast. Herrera is hitting .333 (4 for 12) with a pair of homers in his career against Misiorowski.
