It takes a lot of fuel to power through a 60-minute hockey game. Constant skating alone burns countless calories, and players have become increasingly attuned to what they eat as a major part of their daily training regiment. Hockey players are as particular about their meals as they are their sticks.

Ever wonder about what keeps a hockey player going during a long, grueling season? Each week we’ll take a look at what’s on a player’s plate after practice and before a game.

Pregame meal: “I like to have my pasta on game days. A year ago we used to get meatballs on the road. I enjoyed having meatballs. We get treated pretty well with meals here. I enjoy the pasta, chicken and salad. Carbs and protein.”

Preferred meal on non-game days: “I try to change it up. We try to plan our weekly meals every day and I’ll have chicken tacos quite often as a post game meal. Just throw it in the slow cooker so its ready.”

Foods to avoid: “I try to stay to a healthy diet. I definitely have my cheat days on a day off after a tough weekend. I try to stay away from things like subs. Once in a while I’ll treat myself.”

Cheat meal: “Sometimes on the way home I’ll pick up Wendy’s. It’s real close and easy. After a hard weekend that’s where we’ll go for the cheat day.”

Favorite meal from back home: “Just a home-cooked barbecue. My dad cooks a pretty mean steak, so it’s nice to go home and enjoy that with the family.”
