It takes a lot of fuel to power through a 60-minute hockey game. Constant skating alone burns countless calories, and players have become increasingly attuned to what they eat as a major part of their daily training regiment. Hockey players are as particular about their meals as they are their sticks.

Ever wonder about what keeps a hockey player going during a long, grueling season? Each week we’ll take a look at what’s on a player’s plate after practice and before a game.

Pregame meal: “I’m pretty plain. Mostly chicken, pasta and a veggie, either salad or broccoli. Most guys go to that.”

Preferred meal on non-game days: “They feed us pretty well at the rink, and for dinners I switch it up. I’m not the greatest cook, but stuff like turkey burgers is something I like to cook once in a while.”

Foods to avoid: “Try to stay away from junk food, fast food, as much as you can. They feed us well at the rink and that helps quite a bit. Try to keep it clean.”

Cheat meal: “I’m a huge fan of pizza. Lately it’s been Norm’s Pizza here in town that’s been pretty good. I come from Sault Ste. Marie where it’s straight Italian food everywhere, so pizza is the way to go.”

Favorite meal from back home: “The population in Sault Ste. Marie is 80 percent Italian so there’s a lot of good spots, but sometimes it’s good to swiich since we’re having so much pasta during the season. My mom makes great barbcauce ribs, so that’s something I enjoy when I get to go home.”
