Local roundup: Tunkhannock girls volleyball edges Meyers in five sets

Tunkhannock girls volleyball edged Meyers in the fifth set to win Wednesday’s match 3-2. The Tigers defeated Meyers 27-29, 28-26, 17-25, 25-10, 15-12.

Tunkhannock’s Angela Colbenson had seven kills and two blocks, Jena Simmons had 11 digs and eight aces and Annalise Verbeek had 26 assists and five aces.

Meyers’ Da’nayia Mallard had 10 kills, six service points, three digs and two aces, Kimberly Carter had 15 digs and five kills and Chloe Delp had 19 digs, seven assists and two kills.

Wyoming Valley West 3, MMI Prep 1

The Spartans defeated MMI Prep 25-19, 23-25, 25-14, 25-12.

Wyoming Valley West’s Grace Giza had 31 kills, 12 service points, six aces and three blocks, Tessa Johns had 41 assists, 16 service points and four aces and Andi Blaski had 10 kills, seven service points and five blocks.

MMI Prep’s Lauryn Banyas had 20 assists, nine service points and five kills, Maddie Perchak had 11 service points, eight digs and seven kills and Summer Evancho had 12 service points, nine kills and three aces.

Pittston Area 3, Coughlin 0

Pittston Area defeated Coughlin 25-7, 25-16, 25-12.

Pittston Area’s Emily O’Brien had 17 assists 14 service points and seven aces, Emma Coles had six kills and Scarlet Alexander had four aces.

Coughlin’s Sade Peake had five digs, one kill and one ace and Pilar Cantoran had 10 digs and five service points.

Wyoming Area 3, Berwick 0

Wyoming Area defeated Berwick 25-14, 25-20, 25-22.

Wyoming Area’s Brandi Sorokin had five kills, five blocks and three aces, Olivia Astolfi had five kills and four aces and Jenna Chackan had 11 assists.


Wyoming Valley West 2, Coughlin 0

Wyoming Valley West scored both goals in the second half. Scott Nilson scored the first goal at the start of the second, and Nate Naugle added one late in the second half.

Coughlin’s Cameron Corcoran made two saves in goal for the shutout.


Coughlin 4, Wyoming Valley West 0

Coughlin’s Allyse Filipowich scored two goals, and Kendall Pearage scored one goal and assisted two goals. Courtney Wartella made 13 saves in goal for the shutout.

Wyoming Valley West’s Emma Grimes made nine saves in goal.



King’s 3, Misericordia 1

King’s defeated Misericordia 25-13, 15-25, 25-14, 25-22.

King’s Rachel Miller had 11 kills, Jill Korgeski had nine kills, 17 digs and six blocks and Maddie Kumm had 37 assists.

Misericordia’s Tara Welliver had 10 kills, Ariana Gagliardi had 26 assists and Kaitlin Wheeler had 19 digs.


Wilkes 3, Widener 2

Wilkes’ Marissa Surdy scored the final goal of the game at 7:59 in overtime for the hat trick.

The goal moved her into second place on the school’s all-time goals list with 49, passing Diane Hall.

Misericordia 3, William Paterson 1

Coleby Eldridge, Kyleigh Knell and Madisyn Granoski scored one goal apiece, and Haley Gruber added two assists.

Misericordia was tied 1-1 with 20 minutes left in the second, then scored the final two goals around the 10-minute mark.


King’s 1, Wilkes 0

King’s August Axtman scored the lone goal of the game in the 79th minute.

Owen Geedy made five saves in goal for the team’s fifth consecutive shutout of the season and his sixth of the season.

Eastern 2, Misericordia 0

Eastern’s Jacob Myers scored both goals in the first half of the game.

Eastern had a 13-5 advantage in shots and a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.
