Local Roundup: Valley West girls basketball knocks off first-place Hazleton Area

Grace Giza scored a team-high 17 points Tuesday and Wyoming Valley West knocked Hazleton Area into a first-place tie in the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 girls basketball with a 56-47 victory.

The Spartans, last season’s Division 1 champion, also rode 16 points from Toni Amato and Nicole Boutanos to their third straight win while remaining in title contention. Valley West built a nine-point halftime lead and played Hazleton Area evenly in the second half to secure the victory. The Spartans improved to 7-6 in league play, sitting two games behind Crestwood and Hazleton Area with three games remaining.

The Cougars lost their half-game lead over Crestwood for the Division 1 lead and fell to 9-4. Those two teams will meet at 7:15 p.m. Thursday at Hazleton Area.

Maddie Mrochko finished with a game-high 26 points and knocked down four 3-point goals for the Cougars, but she was the lone Hazleton Area player to score in double figures.

Lake-Lehman 66, Wyoming Area 46

Savannah Purdy led Lake-Lehman with 23 points.

Cassidy Orzel had 16 points for the Warriors.

Northwest 33, Hanover Area 31

Brenna Babcock scores on a floater from the foul line at the buzzer as the Rangers moved within one victory of clinching at least a tie for the WVC Division 3 title.

GIRLS SWIMMING

Berwick 102, Wyoming Area 31

Mia Doll led Berwick with first-place finishes in the 200 IM and the 500 freestyle.

Olivia Bolys had a first-place finish in the 50 freestyle for Wyoming Area.

BOYS SWIMMING

Berwick 89.5, Wyoming Area 38.5

Colin Hill had first-place finishes in the 50 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke for Berwick.
