LEHMAN TWP. — Chris Wadas ran to his second win and Kelly Ciravolo ran to her third in the 38th annual Winters End Run on Sunday at Penn State Wilkes-Barre.

Wadas, 36, of Swoyersville, broke the tape in 23 minutes and 56 seconds. The track and field and cross country head coach at Misericordia University outdistanced Trever Reed, 24, of Gaithersburg, Md — who once ran for Wadas with the Cougars — by 16 seconds in the 4-1/2 mile race.

The two runners ran together over the early part of the race. Then Wadas made his move.

“I shook him at 3 miles into the race,” said Wadas. “(Reed) is a tough cookie. So I knew If I didn’t shake him over the middle of the race — it wasn’t going to happen. Once I pulled ahead, I ran hard for the next five minutes. And once I realized I had opened up a comfortable lead, I settled into a nice, even pace.”

Ciravolo, 38, of Shavertown, won top female honors in wire-to-wire fashion, finishing 10th overall in 28:37. Ciravolo, the area’s top female triathlete (she has won the Wilkes-Barre Triathlon five times), was virtually unchallenged throughout the race.

“I was just hoping to do well here today,” said Ciravolo, who hasn’t been running very much of late due to health problems that developed after giving birth. “I was just hoping for the best. There were no other women running with me, so I just ran with a couple of guys. The wind was tough — really tough.”

Jeff Skwierz and Marina Orrson won this race over the last three years. But neither of those runners were present to defend their crown. Skwierz has been recovering from a problem with the arch of his foot. And Orrson Martino and her husband, John Martino were running in the New York City Half Marathon.
