Michael Bugonowicz is an imposing figure coming out of the bullpen for the Shepherd University baseball team.

The 6-foot-2, 260-pound senior right-hander has a 2-1 record with two saves to help the Hornets kick off the season with a 10-6 overall record and a 2-3 mark in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

Bugonowicz, from Hanover Township (Hanover Area), has a 2.50 ERA in six games with one start. In 18 innings, he has given up nine hits and five runs, all earned, with nine walks and 18 strikeouts. Last season, he was 6-2 with a 2.58 ERA in 11 games with six starts. He spent the two years prior to that at Luzerne Community College.

“Michael has been a pleasure to coach since he arrived on campus,” coach Kevin Anderson said. “He has worked extremely hard at his craft. He had a great season last year and has been a key to our success this season.”

Bugonowicz picked up his victories in relief over Mary Washington and CCNY and had saves against Bridgewater and Lynchburg. His only loss came in his only start, working five innings in a 3-1 setback to Misericordia.

“We have used Michael as a starter and a reliever and he has performed at a very high level,” Anderson said. “He is a leader on our staff. And, off the field, he has excelled in the class room and is on course to graduate.”

Big effort from Biasi

Sophomore left-hander Dante Biasi, who missed last season while recovering from Tommy John surgery, posted his first career college victory when he led the Penn State baseball team to a 9-3 Big Ten win over Rutgers on Sunday in Piscataway, N.J.

The Hazleton Area grad started and pitched six innings, giving up eight hits, one run, which was earned, no walks and six strikeouts. Rutgers’ only score in that span was a fourth-inning home run.

Biasi has pitched in six games with five starts and is 1-2 with a 4.79 ERA. In 20.2 innings, he’s given up 18 hits and 11 runs, all earned, with nine walks and 18 strikeouts.

A first for DeLuca

Cornell senior Dominic DeLuca kicked off the outdoor track season by capturing the 3,000-meter run at the Penn Challenge on Saturday in Philadelphia. The Dallas grad bested a field of 32, finishing with a time of 8:21.90.

DeLuca’s career best time in the 3,000 came when he finished first with a time of 8:06.60 at the IC4A Indoor Track Championships last year as a junior. His only other victory at that distance also came indoors when he won the event at the Greg Page Relays as a freshman.

Hogan seeing action

Redshirt freshman Ryan Hogan is listed as a catcher on the St. John’s baseball roster but he’s sharing duties at first base to help the Red Storm post an 11-7 record after an 8-2 non-league victory over Binghamton on Sunday in Vestal, N.Y.

The Wyoming Valley West grad, who proved his versatility playing multiple positions for the Spartans has six hits with a double, four runs scored and two RBI in the early going and has handled 55 chances without an error at first base.

Gabriel rowing right along

Junior Emily Gabriel is a member of the Bucknell women’s rowing team. The Forty Fort native and Wyoming Seminary grad is competing with the No. 1 varsity eight boat, which opened its spring season at the Cooper Sprints on the Cooper River on Sunday in Cherry Hill, N.J.

The boat finished third to Boston College and West Virginia in the Pettit Final after placing third in its heat behind Rhode Island and North Carolina with a time of 7:45.20.

Krawczeniuk, mates fall short

Senior Ryan Krawczeniuk saw his season and career end when the East Stroudsburg men’s basketball team fell to Northern State in the Warriors’ first-ever trip to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division II Tournament on March 20 in Sioux Falls, S.D.

The Meyers grad was the team’s super sub, averaging 9.0 points and 3.2 rebounds off the bench with 85 assists and 30 steals. He was 54-for-146 (37 percent) from 3-point range. East Stroudsburg finished 27-6.

Big effort for Coffay

Kristen Coffay, a 5-foot-1 freshman right-hander, is a pitcher for the Pitt-Johnstown softball team and had a big game in a 6-3 victory over Ursuline on March 9 in Clermont, Fla.

The Holy Redeemer grad pitched a seven-inning complete game and gave ups five hits and three earned runs. She didn’t walk a batter and struck out a career-high 11 batters for her first collegiate victory.

In three starts, Coffay has a 4.91 earned run average. In 15.2 innings, she’s given up 19 hits and 12 runs, 11 earned, with three walks and 18 strikeouts.

Davies is pitching in

Redshirt junior Alyssa Davies has a 3-3 record pitching for the Bloomsburg softball team. The 5-foot-9 right-hander has started eight games and thrown 28.2 innings. The Crestwood grad has given up 44 hits and 27 runs, 23 earned, with eight walks and 22 strikeouts.

Davies had her best game of the season in a 3-1 loss to Sioux Falls on March 16 in Clermont. She pitched a complete-game six innings and gave up six hits and three runs, two earned, with four walks and five strikeouts.

Medalist honors for Harding

York freshman Emma Harding posted a pair of 83 rounds to total 166 and earn medalist honors and lead the Spartans to victory in Mary Washington’s Eagle Invitational on March 17-18 in Stafford, Va.

It was the Tunkhannock grad’s first individual title and the first-ever by a York player. She opened the spring season by finishing tied for 11th (90-89—179) at the Taylor Made Invitational March 12-13 in Dataw Island, S.C.

After being a fixture on a highly successful Hanover Area team, Mike Bugonowicz is pitching for Shepherd University in his senior year.
