Delaney Romanchick threw a perfect game with 14 strikeouts as Wyoming Seminary defeated MMI Prep 8-0 Friday in a Wyoming Valley Conference Division 3 softball game.

Romanchick needed 88 pitches to achieve her accomplishment. She retired the other batters on five groundouts and two flyouts.

Despite Romanchick’s dominance in the circle, the game was scoreless through three innings until Seminary scored three times in the bottom of the fourth.

Alicia Carr continued her hot hitting for the Blue Knights, going 2 for 4 with a triple, three RBI and a run scored. Hallie Kehl was 2 for 4 with a triple, RBI and run scored. Lauren Fletcher helped out by going 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI.

Romanchick helped her own cause with a single, RBI and run scored. Aubrey Mytych singled, knocked in a run and scored a run.

Hazleton Area 8, Tunkhannock 5

Hazleton Area rallied with five runs in the final two innings to win a battle of teams which finished as PIAA state runners-up last year.

Kyra Antolick led the Hazleton Area offense, going 3 for 3 with a homer, double and three RBI. Marissa Trivelpiece homered and finished with two RBI.

Hailey Farr was 3 for 4 with a double for Tunkhannock. Kendra Schultz was 2 for 4 with two RBI.

BASEBALL

Berwick 7, Tunkhannock 5

Max Slusser hit a three-run homer in the third inning and added another three-run blast in the fifth to power Berwick past host Tunkhannock.

Kaleb Gearinger knocked in the other Berwick run in the four-run fifth. Alec Markle was 2 for 4 with two runs scored.

Connor Munley was 2 for 3 for Tunkhannock with a double and to RBI. Dave Baltrusaitis and Mike Astegher added two hits each.

Hazleton Area 5, Coughlin 3 (9 inn.)

Ryan Pietrzyk pitched two innings of scoreless relief as Hazleton Area outlasted Coughlin in nine innings.

Matt Gentile paced the Cougars’ offense with a pair of RBI. Gabe Colyer was 2 for 4.

George Oko, Ben Yozwiak and Pedro Betancourt each had two hits for Coughlin.

Grula leads Cougars

Hours before jumping for rebounds in the Wyoming Valley Conference Senior All-Star Boys Basketball Classic, Joey Grula made a leap that lifting the Hazleton Area boys track team to victory.

Grula won the high jump in a meet that came down to the final event Friday, lifting the Cougars over hard-luck Coughlin, 76-74.

Coughlin entered the high jump with a 73-68 lead, but Grula cleared 6-feet to win the event and five points for Hazleton Area, while his teammate Scott Campbell took second place for three more points to clinch the victory.

Grula was a triple winner as the Cougars moved to 1-1 on the season, also capturing the triple jump with a distance of 44-2 and finishing first in the pole vault with a throw of 161-2.

Ryan Steiner joined him as a triple winner for Hazleton Area, as he placed first in the 1,600 run in 5:01, the 800 run in 2:13 and was part of the winning 3,200 relay team.

Afterwards, Grula scored 12 points and pulled down a team-high nine rebounds in helping Team Black to victory in thebasketball all-star game.

Cole Horan set a new school record by winning the long jump with a leap of 22-2, where Grula finished second with adistance of 21-8.

Rafael McCoy won in four events — the 100 and 200 dashes and on the 400 and 1,600 relay teams — for a Crusaders teamthat fell to 0-2 after tying Dallas on the scoreboard but losing out on the number of events won in Coughlin’s seasonopener.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Berwick 3, Nanticoke Area 1

Santiago Segura made 28 assists and the Bulldogs team improved to 3-0 on the season after defeating the Trojans, 16-25,25-7, 25-11 and 25-13.

Segura also served six aces among his 13 service points.

Nanticoke Area was led by Carlos Castillo, who had two service points, three aces, seven kills, five assists and eight digs.

BOYS LACROSSE

Delaware Valley 10, Wyoming Seminary 2

Jackson Melnick scored three goalsand added an assist for Delware Valley. Connor Dennis added two goals for the Blue Knights while Ryan Anderson added a goal and an assist.

BOYS TENNIS

Holy Redeemer 4, Pittston Area 1

Holy Redeemer’s No. 3 singles competitor Dominic Marchese picked up a 6-4, 6-2 win in two sets over Pittston Area’s John Romanoski.

Pittston Area’s lone win on the day came from No. 2 singles competitor Mark Costello, as he defeated Mark Harrison 6-3, 6-4.

Wyoming Seminary 5, Wyoming Area 0

The Blue Knights No. 2 singles competitor Jerry Tang had a dominant two-set performance not allowing a single point.

Wyoming Area’s Nick Harth pushed Wyoming Seminary’s Chris Kocon the distance in the first singles match before losing in the third set.
