The Wyoming Valley Conference baseball season concluded with no tie-breaking championship games needed this season.

After such a tight regular season in all three divisions a year ago, parity wasn’t so present this season.

Dallas (12-1) and Hanover Area (13-1) won Division 2 and Division 3 with ease. Dallas, the reigning Class 4A state champion, won the division by six games in front on Tunkhannock and Berwick. The Hawkeyes finished three games ahead of second-place Wyoming Seminary and Meyers.

Division 1 was the closest divisional race with Crestwood (9-4) claiming its second straight crown on the last day of the regular season with a win over Nanticoke to hold off second place Wyoming Valley West (8-5) and Hazleton Area (8-5).

Now, it’s time to get serious.

The brackets for the District 2 tournament were released on Sunday with Dallas (Class 4A) being the only team from the WVC to claim a No. 1 seed. The Hawkeyes (Class 3A) and Comets (5A) both picked up No. 2 seeds.

It’s now a 10-day sprint to the finish. The tournaments start Monday with nine games on the schedule.

Highlighting Monday’s schedule is the Division 1 champ Comets hosting winless Coughlin (0-13) at 4:30 p.m. in a Class 5A opener, while Wyoming Valley West (8-5) hosts Abington Heights, and Pittston Area stays at home to take on Wallenpaupack also in 5A.

Holy Redeemer (8-6), which advanced to the state final last year, is seeded seventh in Class 3A and takes on tenth-seeded Dunmore (7-7) at 4:30 p.m. at Hollenback.

Other Class 3A games Monday are Lake-Lehman at Riverside, GAR at Meyers, and Carbondale at Wyoming Seminary, while MMI Prep travels to Lincoln Leadership in a Class A quarterfinal.

The Division 3 champion Hawkeyes have a bye in the first round and will play on Wednesday against the winner of the Dunmore-Holy Redeemer game. Hanover Area tied Lakeland with 13-1 records. The Chiefs claimed the No. 1 seed via coin flip tiebreaker.

Dallas officially starts its title defense on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. when the team hosts eighth-seeded Honesdale (3-9).

Other Class 4A games on Tuesday include Wyoming Area at Tunkhannock, Scranton Prep at Berwick, and Nanticoke vs. Valley View at the University of Scranton.

District 2 play ends with the finals being held May 27-30 at PNC Field.

District or subregional champions advance to the first round of the PIAA Championships on June 4 in every classification except 3A, where the champion and runner-up advance to the state tournament.
