Avenging a 7-5 loss to Babson on Sunday, earlier in the Mid-Atlantic Regional, the Misericordia baseball team swept the Beavers on Monday to win the regional championship and punch its first-ever ticket to the Division III College World Series.
Misericordia will head to Appleton, Wisc., winners of nine of their last 11 games after taking down Babson 12-7 Monday morning and then 11-1 in the championship game in the afternoon.
Drake Koch was named the region’s Most Outstanding Player and was joined on the All-Tournament team by teammates Tyler Holzapfel, Alec Iurato, Dan Zurowski, Parker Abate and Kyle Melahn.
Holzapfel went 3-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored to lead the Cougars in the nightcap Monday afternoon. Iurato drove in two runs and Kenny Jarema, Abate, Holzapfel, Santon Guinta and Sean Boylan each scored twice.
Kyle Melahn got the rare start on the mound for Misericordia and went six strong innings, striking out three while allowing just one run on five hits. Just like the first game of the day, Dan Zurowski threw three scoreless innings out of the bullpen to earn the save.
Concordia-Chicago, SUNY Oswego, Randolph-Macon, Texas Lutheran, Swarthmore, Texas-Tyler and Wooster are all joining the Cougars in Wisconsin.
