WILKES-BARRE — After putting a gold medal around the neck of Olivia Wolk, Hazleton Area coach Heather Natt picked up a softball a few feet away and handed it to her.

If any Cougar deserved to hold the ball that clinched a spot in the state playoffs on Wednesday, it was Wolk.

The freshman catcher hit a two-run homer, drove in four runs and threw out two runners trying to steal as Hazleton Area defeated Williamsport 10-6 in the District 2/4 Class 6A championship game at Wilkes University.

Up next for Hazleton Area, which finished as the 6A state runner-up last year, is the PIAA 6A state playoffs on Monday. The Cougars will face the District 1 fourth seed — either North Penn or Garnet Valley — at a site and time to be announced. Those team play in the D4 third-place game Thursday.

Wolk helped Hazleton Area tear open a close game with her two-run clout to center field in the Cougars’ four-run fourth inning.

“I didn’t think it was going over at first because I had my head down the whole time,” Wolk said. “After I picked it up, I thought it was going to be a pop-up, but I saw it go over.”

Marissa Trievelpiece added a two-run single in the fourth for a 9-3 lead. Not to be outdone by her cousin Wolk, Trivelpiece added a solo homer in the sixth for Hazleton Area’s final run.

“Last time she hit one, we did the same thing,” Trivelpiece said. “She hit one first then I hit one. That was a big hit by her. She played phenomenal today.”

Wolk had a two-run single in the second as Hazleton Area used the hit — its only of the inning — and a couple Williamsport errors to score three times and take a 3-2 lead.

Not bad for the No. 9 hitter in the batting order.

“I think she has 18 RBIs so she’s right up there with everybody else, our big boys,” Natt said. “She is sneaky in the nine hole and she always turns us over every time. She is scrappy little hitter and is going to run the basepaths as hard as she could for you.”

And throw out runners. Williamsport was 1-for-3 in steal attempts with Wolk throwing out runners at second in the third and sixth innings. The latter was particularly important as the Millionaires had scored three times, cutting the deficit to 9-6, when Wolk threw out Moriah Wright to end the inning.

Prior to the four-run fourth, Hazleton Area scored twice in the third when Kyra Antolick lined a double barely inside the left-field foul line to scored Taylor Kaschak and Tiana Treon.
