EDWARDSVILLE — The Tunkhannock softball team showed all season it could score runs. The approach Monday, though, was a bit surprising.

The Tigers started the game with three consecutive bunts to score two runs as last year’s Class 4A state runners-up went on to defeat Bishop McDevitt 7-2 in a PIAA 4A first-round game at Wilkes University.

District 2 champion Tunkhannock (19-4) moves to Thursday’s quarterfinals, where it will play District 11 champ Bethlehem Catholic at a site and time to be announced. Bethlehem Catholic defeated D4 champ Jersey Shore 8-3.

Despite having 11 homers among its 57 extra-base hits coming into the game, Tunkhannock decided to play some small ball. Faith Jones bunted to start the game, reaching on an error. After moving to second on a wild pitch, Hope Jones bunted her way aboard.

Faith Jones scored on another wild pitch and Hope Jones scored on a bunt by Hailey Farr to make it 2-0.

“(Coach Bob Hegedty) felt confident, and they made an error on the first one, so I guess keep bunting it until they make the play,” said Farr, who later added an RBI single to left in the fourth inning.

“Usually, Faith will try to get on with small game to start off,” Hope Jones said. “Once we figured out they had a little trouble fielding that, we kind of emphasized that and kept trying to put small ball down.

“Once we got that working, all the big hits came that we’ve been waiting for.”

McDevitt tied the score 2-2 in the third when Laura Gerula doubled in a run and later scored on a throwing error. But that was the extent of the Crusaders’ offense. Kendra Schultz took over for Hope Jones in the circle and pitched four perfect innings against the District 3 third seed.

“We thought Hope didn’t have her best fastball tonight and they were kind of on it a little bit,” Hegedty said. “So we brought Kendra in a little early and it worked out big for us.”

Tunkhannock started swinging away after the bunt-fest and it paid off. Hope Jones had an RBI double in the bottom of the third and later scored on a wild pitch for a 4-2 advantage.

The Tigers then used three hits — a double by Mackayla Quick and singles by Gabby Roote and Hope Jones — and an error to score two more times in the fourth. They completed their scoring in the sixth as Hope Jones completed a 4-for-4 day with a single and later scored when Farr recorded her second RBI of the game.
