A big finish to Payden Montana’s high school career ended with a flourish when the recent Berwick graduate was named the Gatorade Pennsylvania girls track and field athlete of the year Thursday.

Montana won the shot put competition at the New Balance National Championships with a throw of 49-11.75 Sunday, after earning a third-place national finish in discus Saturday.

Montana, who will throw for Penn State next season, broke the state shot put record by winning her second straight PIAA Class 3A shot put gold medal with a throw of 54 feet. She also won gold in the state discus, collecting Berwick’s only three first-place state finishes in school history.

Montana won her third straight District 2 gold medal and broke her own district record with a distance of 50-4 last month, and also set the District 2 discus record while winning gold in that event.

During the WVC season, Montana broke and re-broke the Berwick shot put, discus and javelin marks and went unbeaten in all three throwing events through her final seven regular-season meets.
