MOOSIC – Holy Redeemer’s baseball season ended more than a month ago in the District 2 Class 3A Tournament.

Sean Wills, who recently graduated from the school, didn’t show any rust at all on Sunday. Staying fresh by playing American Legion baseball, Wills helped the Wyoming Valley Conference defeat the Lackawanna League 11-7 in extra innings in the Small School Field of Dreams Game at PNC Field by going 3-for-4 with three RBI.

“It was real fun. They came back in the last inning and after they did, it made it more interesting and it was a good result for us. It was a fun time for everybody,” said Wills, who also pitched a scoreless inning. “I just go into the box every time looking to get a hit and do whatever I can to help the team out and just had a good game for me and won as a team.”

Wills tied the game in the top of the seventh inning with a one-out double, scoring Northwest Area’s Brandon Hardiman to tie the game at 6-6 after Lackawanna had exploded for five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to overcome a 5-1 deficit.

The game went an extra frame and the top of the eighth started using the International Tiebreaker rules with runners on first and second. Hanover Area’s Matt Clarke (2-for-3) singled home a run to give the WVC the lead at 7-6. But the big blow came from Lake-Lehman’s Chris Hadsall, who put the game out of reach with a bases-loaded triple.

“We’re all just out here having a good time. We’re all seniors, all graduating coming out playing one last game together,” said Hadsall, who finished 1-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. “I knew as soon as I hit it that it was gonna be a good hit so I tried to get three. I knew if I got my pitch, I’d do what I wanted and I got a good pitch.”

The WVC took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a bases-loaded walk from Northwest’s Brandon Hardiman on the fourth walk of the inning. Two batters later, Wills brought home two with a single to build a 3-0 lead. Hardiman scored in the third on a fielder’s choice, while Wyoming Seminary’s Michael Oravic tripled and scored on a wild pitch in the fourth for a 5-1 lead.

Sam Sweitzer, from Wyoming Seminary, pitched the seventh and eighth innings to earn the win.
