MOOSIC – The high school baseball season in the Wyoming Valley Conference consisted of countless weather-related postponements, whether being snow, rain or just plain cold weather.

So it seemed fitting that the unofficial end to the WVC season concluded with rough weather.

The Big School Field of Dream Game at PNC Field was halted in the fifth inning when strong thunderstorms blew through Moosic.

The contest, which was the nightcap of a doubleheader, ended with the Wyoming Valley Conference and the Lackawanna League knotted in a 3-3 tie.

Coaches on both teams didn’t want to wait out a lengthy delay and then possibly risk injury to a player, who is currently playing American Legion or travel ball. Instead the game was halted.

The Lackawanna League scored two runs in the bottom of the first on a two-run double by North Pocono’s Cory Wall.

That wasn’t an overwhelming obstacle for the WVC stars to get past. They immediately answered with two in the top of the second. Wyoming Area’s Dylan Melberger singled in a run with no outs. Three batters later, Crestwood’s Brett Caladie walked with the bases loaded to tie the game at 2-2.

“It was a great experience. It was a lot of fun to meet some new kids and make some new friends,” Melberger said.

After the Lackawanna stars went back in front in the bottom of the second inning on a RBI single from Noah Worsnick, Melberger came up with the bases loaded in the top of the fifth.

This time, he was hit by a pitch, and the game 3-3.

Lakeland pitcher Dom Verrastro struck out the next two WVC hitters to get out of the jam without allowing anyone else to score.

Then with Mike Kowalski from North Pocono leading off the bottom of the inning, the thunderstorm started with a bright flash of lightning, signaling the teams to race off the field.

“It was still a great time and I was just coming here looking to have fun and (weather) is just what happens,” Melberger said. “I got to see a lot of good pitchers that I never faced before. So it’s definitely good seeing some new arms.”

Crestwood’s Corey Chalk started the game on the mound and pitched two innings for the WVC, while Connor Munley from Tunkhannock and Hazleton Area’s Cody Reese each tossed one scoreless frame. Dallas’ Nick Kocher was on the mound when play concluded.

Wyoming Valley West’s Austin Sienkiewicz went 2-for-2 with a single and a triple, while scoring once. Hazleton Area’s Chris Heim was the only WVC batter to get a hit, finishing 1-for-3 with a run. The WVC did have plenty of baserunners as they also drew five walks.
