Mountain Top softball wins District 16 Little League title

Jessica Koptcho struck out 11 batters to pick up the pitching victory Monday, leading Mountain Top past Nanticoke 10-6 and to the District 16 Junior Softball title in the completion of a game that was suspended by rain Sunday.

The teams were tied 4-4 when play resumed in the top of the fifth inning Monday, but Mountain Top outscored Nanticoke 6-2 over the final three innings to clinch the district championship.

Mountain Top will advance to the Section 5 Junior Softball Playoffs, which run from July 4-7.

Koptcho also singled four times at the plate and Stephanie Pollock tripled for Mountain Top.

Adele Dougherty and Lauren Amend both finished with two hits in the victory.

Tiffany Brogan finished with five strikeouts for Nanticoke.

DISTRICT 16

8-10 SOFTBALL

Mountain Top 16, Plains 4 (4 inn.)

Winning pitcher Keira Dougherty struck out six and had a hit to help Mountain Top past Plains.

Mattingly Divers had two hits for Mountain Top. Ella Brady had a double while Kyra Bechtel and Georgia Reed each had a single.

Caitlyn Sekelsky had two hits for Plains. Abigail Major and Katelyn Suchocki each had a hit. Pitcher Juliana Menedez struck out three.

MAJOR SOFTBALL

Pittston Area 15,

Nanticoke 0

Gianna Adams pitched a four-inning no-hitter and struck out eight batters as Pittston Area won big in a game played Sunday.

Adams also went 3-for-3 at the plate. Isabella Giardina, Ava Callahan, Maura Mihalka and Riley McCarthy all had two hits in the victory and Jaylee Jenkins had an RBI.

Nanticoke pitcher Shaley Heffron finished with five strikeouts.

DISTRICT 31

MAJOR SOFTBALL

Back Mountain 12,

Greater Wyoming Area 2

Victoria Spaciano struck out seven batters and ripped a triple and a double at the plate as Back Mountain powered to a victory Sunday and into the District 31 championship game.

Back Mountain, which went 4-0 in round-robin play, advanced to the 5:30 p.m. district title game Wednesday at the Back Mountain Little League field.

Jordyn Porasky drove home three runs for Back Mountain and Abby Beyer had three singles. Also in the victory, Abby Cruz had a double and a single and Allison Vitanovec finished with two singles.

MAJOR BASEBALL

Back Mountain National 15,

Swoyersville 0

Zach Paczewski blasted two home runs, including a grand slam and Mike Combo belted another as Back Mountain National ended the game decisively after three innings.

Paczewski launched his first homer in the first inning and his grand slam came in the second to help Back Mountain to a big early lead.

Paczewski and Sam Barrouk combined to pitch a one-hit shutout.

Back Mountain will play again at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Kingston.

West Side 15, Northwest 14

Matthew Magda tied the game with a home run and earned the victory pitching in relief as West Side prevailed in an offensive explosion for both teams.

Magda, who finished with three hits, unloaded his blast in the top of the sixth inning to even the score at 9-9. Trevor McManus then delivered the go-ahead hit.

Paul Rosmo also had three hits for West Side, while Scott Davis added two hits.

Zander Mott had two hits for Northwest, including a home run and Brett Ashelman also finished with two hits.

Starter Joey Colarusso and reliever Thomas Chervenitski combined for 11 strikeouts as West Pittston slipped past Harveys Lake.

Matthew Little tripled and Colarusso doubled to pace the winners at the plate.

Harveys Lake’s Gavin Wallace struck out six and added a double.

AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL

Mtn. Post-781 5, Nanticoke 0

Brad Papura and Anthony Vital combined on a three-hitter with seven strikeouts as Mountain Post shut out Nanticoke.
