Local roundup: Pittston Area wins D16 major softball title

Pittston Area used a team effort to defeat Nanticoke 18-3 Tuesday to capture the District 16 Major Softball championship.

Pittston Area advances to the Section 5 playoffs July 3-7.

Winning pitcher Gianna Adams struck out 13 and had a triple, two doubles and a single at the plate. Katie Wywoda pitched the final inning.

Ava Callahan had two triples and two doubles for Pittston Area. Marina Antal had two doubles and a single. Cassie Hintze had three hits. Isabella Giardina, Olivia Walter and Maura Mihalka all had two hits.

Adding singles for Pittston Area were Jaylee Jenkins, Emma Rinaldi, Abby Nowakowski and Alyvia Doran.

Nanticoke pitchers Shaylee Hoffman and Katie Keating combined for four strikeouts.


Back Mountain 17, Harveys Lake 0 (4 inn.)

Nina Barrouk threw a four-inning no-hitter with 12 strikeouts as Back Mountain defeated Harveys Lake.

Barrouk, Hannah Chipego and Carolyn Thomas all homered and singled.

Harveys Lake 12, Northwest 2

Gracie Bukavage struck out 12 batters and Harveys Lake rolled to a 10-run victory in four innings in a game played Monday.

Alexis Shotwell, Bailey Wallace and Alana Morris all had two singles apiece in the win.

Greater Wyo. Area 8, Northwest 2

Arianna Gaylord struck out 13 as GWA defeated Northwest.

Rebecca Gula and Renee Haddock had two hits each for GWA.


Harveys Lake 7, Back Mountain 4

Winning pitcher Krista Scoblick recorded nine strikeouts while Alison Newhart had three doubles for Harveys Lake. Jillian Ulozas, Rylee Bucknavage and Amber Kocher all added a double.

Lexi Dougherty and Riley Egan each had a double for Back Mountain.


Mountain Top 7, Pittston Area 5

Jorja Snyder hit a two-run single in the sixth inning as Mountain Top rallied to top Pittston Area.

Winning pitcher Keira Dougherty and Jordan Andrews each added two hits. Madison Mendrzycki, Georgia Reed and Aly Decker all added a hit.

Liliana Hintze had nine strikeouts and a single for Pittston Area, which tied the game with five runs in the fifth inning. Grace Callahan had two hits. Nora Callahan and Sophia Reza added a single each.


Back Mtn. American 14, Back Mtn. North 2

Back Mountain American scored nine runs in the first inning, leading to a victory Monday night.

A bunt single by Lucas Tirpak, who went 2-for-2 with a triple and a walk, started the rally. Evan Kaiser hit two doubles and Ben Fenster went 1-for-1 with two walks. Alex Aiello, Tucker Chesman, Tyler Casey and Ben Fenster all pitched and combined on a one-hitter.

Bryce Phillips singled in the first for Back Mountain North.


Swoyersville 6, Greater Pittston 5, 8 innings

Austin Sienkiewicz hit a two-run homer with no outs in the bottom of the eighth to give Swoyersville the victory.

Jake Packer led off the inning with a single. Tyler O’Kane picked up the win in relief, striking out three in the eighth inning.

Cole Cherkas and Ryan Petrucci had a single and an RBI apiece for Greater Pittston.

Mtn. Post-781 10, Tunkhannock 0, 5 innings

Justin Darden knocked in three runs and Corey Chalk added two RBI as Mountain Post-781 shut out Tunkhannock.

Pitcher Dave Wickiser limited Tunkhannock to two hits in four innings of work.
