Local roundup: Back Mountain softball prevails in Section 5

Allison Vitanovec went 3-for-3 with two doubles, two runs and two RBI while Victoria Spaciano struck out 10 to lead Back Mountain to a 5-2 victory over Tripps Park on Thursday in the Section 5 Little League Major Softball tournament.

Spaciano added an RBI double at the plate. Brenna Hunt had two hits, including a home run, and Ava Hudak and Amber Zimmerman both had a hit apiece in the win.

Back Mountain will now take on Pittston Area at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Old Forge.



Kingston/Forty Fort 11, Northwest 10

Jake Ranieli hit a walk-off, two-run triple in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Kingston/Forty Fort a wild semifinal victory.

Kingston/Forty Fort had trailed 9-5 in the sixth before Max Bowen’s second hit of the game ultimately sent it to extras. Northwest went back on top 10-9 in the seventh prior to another rally in the home half. Jadiel Gutierrez earned the win in relief.

Ryan Miner turned in a strong start on the mound for Northwest and added two hits at the plate. R.J. Moyer had three hits and Trevor Dietz had two.

Back Mountain National 14, Back Mountain American 4

Brady Zapoticky homered and finished with three hits and five RBI in National’s five-inning semifinal victory.

Zach Williams (two hits, four RBI), Chris Sholtis and Sam Finarelli all added a double apiece. Kyle Chesman picked up the win.

American got two hits from Sam Rolland and one from Jack Dale.



Township Baseball 3, Plains 1

Drew Cisney struck out 10 and pitched five innings of two-hit baseball for Township while going 3-for-3 at the plate in the semifinals.

Chris Scavo chipped in with two hits and Brycen Martin closed things out on the mound in the sixth.

Pitcher Nick Mazzarella led the effort for Plains.

Mountain Top 9, South Wilkes-Barre 4

Dylan Domzalski finished a home run short of the cycle, collecting three hits and four RBI in Mountain Top’s semifinal win, which was called in the middle of the fifth inning due to darkness.

Xavier Bleiler, Chris Litchkofski and Jacob Lettieri all added two hits for Mountain Top.

Xzavier Brown (double) had two hits for South Wilkes-Barre, which got singles from Kolton Davies, Jacob Missal and Dave Jannuzzi.


Swoyersville 11, Greater Pittston 3

Austin Sienkiewicz hit a two-run homer to highlight a 4-for-5, four-RBI performance at the plate for Swoyersville.

Jake Packer added three hits and Dom Bayo had two as all nine Swoyersville players recorded a hit and the team finished with 17 total. Tommy Federici went the distance for the win.

Steve Homza led Greater Pittston, doubling and driving in a run.

Back Mountain 6, Tunkhannock 5

Back Mountain broke out for five runs in the second inning before holding off Tunkhannock. Sam Sweitzer and Jake Wesley had three hits apiece with Sweitzer earning the win on the mound. Justin Finarelli keyed the big second inning with a two-run double and also pitched the final 2.2 innings for the save.

Will Dziak led Tunkhannock, going 2-for-3 with a double.
