Local roundup: Mountain Top wins junior softball crown

Jessica Koptcho struck out six in the circle and added four hits at the plate to help lead Mountain Top to the Section 5 Little League Junior Softball title on Friday with an 18-4 win over Harveys Lake in five innings.

Adele Dougherty (triple) and Reese Yenchick (double) added three hits apiece in the win while Tori Harper and Stephanie Pollock (double) each had two. Victoria Butler (triple), Brooke Aton, Mallory Moratori, Jessica Niznik and Lauren Amend also added hits.

Harveys Lake pitcher Krista Scoblick struck out two and hit a double. Haily Kline and Ali Newhart both singled.

Mountain Top moves to the state tournament, which will take place at the Berwick Little League from July 11-16.

SECTION 5 SENIOR BASEBALL

Hanover Area 11, South Scranton 5

Todd Koblicka pitched 5.1 innings of relief, striking out eight and allowing one hit in Hanover Area’s victory.

Nate Jaslar had two hits and an RBI for Hanover Area. Justin Stefanowicz doubled and knocked in two runs. Kevin Polanco had a single and three RBI.

Jay Rieder had a double and two RBI for South Scranton.

The teams will play at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hanover Area High School.

DISTRICT 16 8-10 BASEBALL

Pittston City/Duryea 11, Avoca/Dupont 1 (4 inn.)

Nick Innamorati had three hits in a strong offensive output for PCD.

Nico Cielo had a double and single for PCD. Dom Salvo had two hits and Kyle Franchetti tripled. Bobby Smith was the winning pitcher.

Dave Perks had a single for Avoca/Dupont. Michael Wiendkoski scored his team’s only run.

Township Baseball 12, Mountain Top 4

Jacob Harnen reached base three times and brought home five runs for Township. Elijah Barr came on in relief in the third inning to nail things down and Ethan Astewicz recorded five putouts at second base.

DISTRICT 31 8-10 BASEBALL

Back Mtn. American 15, Northwest 4 (4 inn.)

Wilson Sordoni was 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBI for American. Kevin Osipower was 3-for-3 with a walk.

Bobby Gregor added a double, two RBI and a walk. Jude Matlock doubled. Winning pitcher Logan Geskey teamed with two other hurlers to limit the Northwest offense.

Caden Masakowski doubled and knocked in two runs for Northwest.

Greater Wyo. Area 10, West Side 0 (4 inn.)

Luke Kopetchny threw a two-hitter and added a single and two runs in GWA’s win.

Jacob Snyder was 2-3 with an RBI and two runs for GWA. Nick Ciampi was 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs. Ben Rogish had a hit and an RBI and scored a run.

Back Mountain National 8, Kingston/Forty Fort 7

Starter Will Jenkins pitched four strong innings for the win and Scott Egbert picked up a save as Back Mountain National defeated Kingston/Forty Fort.

Jenkins added a double, two singles, three RBI and two runs scored. Dominick Zangardi doubled, singled and scored three times. Brady Youngblood had two hits and an RBI. Owen Stretanski and Andrew Mathis each had a single.

Sam Shovlin hit a double and single for KFF. Billy Bell had a single. D’Vonte Rivers had two hits and struck out five.

DISTRICT 16 9-11 BASEBALL

Mountain Top 15, Pittston City/Duryea 2

Chris Litchkofski homered, tripled and drove in three runs as part of a strong offensive game for Mountain Top.

Xavier Bleiler had a triple, double and three RBI. Cameron Scotti had three hits and four RBI. Nick Weber and Dylan Weikel had two hits each.

T.J. Johnson had a double for PCD. Josh Lentonski and Rich Tonte each had a single.

LEGION BASEBALL

Mountain Post 17, WB/WB Twp. 2 (6 inn.)

Mountain Post scored eight runs in the second inning and added eight more in the sixth to end the game.

Mick Bafunno drove in four runs for Mountain Post. Nick Vital added four RBI and Justin Darden added two more.

Brad Papura picked up the win.

Tunkhannock 7, Back Mountain 1

Tyler Faux threw one-hit ball over six innings and also knocked in two runs to pace Tunkhannock to a victory.

Matt Goodwin was 3-for-4 with a double for Tunkhannock.

Josh Holdredge drove in Back Mountain’s only run in the third inning.
