Gianna Adams struck out 11 batters to pick up the win as Pittston Area advanced to the winner’s bracket final Wednesday, beating Avon Grove 9-1 in the Pennsylvania State Little League Major Softball Tournament.
Offensively, Cassie Hintz singled and doubled for Pittston Area while Ava Callahan had an RBI double, Maura Maihalka had two singles and Olivia Walter had a single and an RBI double.
Pittston Area will face Tunkhannock, which beat Morrisville, at 7 p.m. Thursday at Calm Township Little League in Thorndale. The tournament is double-elimination.
Tunkhannock previously won the District 15 and Section 3 tournament titles while Pittston Area came out on top in District 16 and Section 5 to reach states.

Hanover Area 12, Greenville 2
Nathan Jaslar picked up the win after pitching 4.2 innings as Hanover Area beat Greenville to advance to the winner’s bracket second round Thursday in DuBois.
Tory Matric collected three hits and three RBI in a winning effort, while Kevin Polanco added two hits and two RBI and Auggie George posted a hit and an RBI.
Hanover Area will face Octorara at 5 p.m. Octorara beat Hollidaysburg, 4-3, on Wednesday.
Back Mountain 13, Greater Wyoming Area 10
Gary Weaver recorded three hits and picked up the victory on the mound to lead Back Mountain past GWA in the conclusion of an eight-inning game that had previously been suspended due to rain.
Jared Adamski also tallied three hits for Back Mountain, while five hitters each picked up a pair of hits — Justin Moss, Ethan Leone, Mitch Burgess, Jacob Seymour and Liam Hyte.
GWA was paced by Jude Janosky and Henry Rosen, who each picked up a pair of hits.
The teams meet against Thursday at 5:45 p.m. at Dallas High School as they continue their best-of-three series.
Pittston 16, South Wilkes-Barre 1
Alex Hoban finished with three hits and three runs scored in Pittston’s four-inning victory. Brayden Powers added a hit and three runs while Kyle Breymeier had a hit and two runs.
Connor Mulhern went the distance, throwing a three-hitter while striking out two.
Aidan McFarland scored the lone run for South Wilkes-Barre and added a hit.
Kingston/Forty Fort 18, GWA 6
D’Vonte Rivers helped pitch toward the win for Kingston/Forty Fort while also collecting three hits at the plate.
Billy Bell also collected three hits while Evan Harchar and Sam Shovlin each picked up two hits in a winning effort. Like Rivers, Shovlin also pitched for Kingston/Forty Fort.
GWA was paced by Alex Vacula, who collected two hits, and Luke Kopetchney, who struck out three Kingston/Forty Fort batters.
Kingston/Forty Fort will play Back Mountain National Saturday at South Wilkes-Barre in the 8-9-10 final.
Back Mountain National 11, Back Mountain American 5
Back Mountain National used a seven-run fourth inning to bury Back Mountain American.
Scott Egbert picked up the winning, pitching a pair of innings, while also doubling and scoring a pair of runs. Offensively, Brady Youngblood had a double and single for Back Mountain National while Will Jenkins tripled and knocked in four runs and Dominick Zangardi doubled and tripled.
Back Mountain American was paced by two hits from Bobby Gallagher and Will Sordoni. Bobby Gregor also doubled in the loss.
Plains 6, Township Baseball 2
Nathan Fritz picked up the win after pitching two innings of relief and 2-for-3 with an RBI to propell Plains into Saturday’s 8-9-10 final against Mountain Top.
Alex Hufford was 2-for-3 with an RBI, Leo Nockley was 2-for-3 in a winning effort, Jake Howe pitched four innings of one-run baseball with five strikeouts for Plains.
Township Baseball was paced by Elijah Barr, who homered, and Paul Ferentino’s 3-for-3 night at the plate. Jacoby Harnen also threw out two base runners.
Saturday’s final against Mountain Top is at 4 p.m. at South Wilkes-Barre.
Mountain Top 10, Pittston City/Duryea 6
Connor Wagaman was the winning pitcher and went 3-for-4 with a triple and 2 RBI for Mountain Top.
Jack Rogers also was 3-for-4 three RBI in a winning effort.
Pittston City/Duryea was paced by Lucas Lopresto with 1-for-3 with two runs.
Plains 5, Wilkes-Barre/Wilkes-Barre Township 0
Pedro Betancourt led Plains in a thrashing of Wilkes-Barre/Wilkes-Barre Township. Betancourt was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. His two hits were a game-high.
Jacob Lupas, Cameron Krugel and John Vernagis all had RBI for Plains.
Aaron Farrell, Caden Strobel, Dave Nargoski and Luke Richards all had hits for Wilkes-Barre/Wilkes-Barre Township.
