MOOSIC — The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders never had a chance.

The Rochester Red Wings got after RailRiders starting pitcher Josh Rogers early, scoring runs in each of the first two innings while the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre offense was sluggish once again.

By game’s end, the RailRiders only tallied a pair of hits and a pair of walks, while Rochester pounded out 16 hits.

The two-run lead the Red Wings (43-44) built after just two innings would be more than enough as Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (46-43) was able to muster juar one run in what was their second straight loss to open the second half of the season, falling 9-1.

“The offense? What offense?,” RailRiders manager Bobby Mitchell said. “Our offense was — obviously we had two hits, two walks, so we had four baserunners. We had a first and third, which is a plus for the baserunning, and then we had a sac fly. That’s about it.

“It’s always kind of a question mark how teams are going to come back from the all-star break. I think it’s a little too early to tell, but we’ll see in the next two days exactly how we respond.”

Rogers outing brought back nightmares from his last disasterous outing on June 9 against Louisville. Like Friday, he gave up 13 hits to take the loss.

It was a slow pain for Rogers against the Red Wings, who gave up seven runs over seven innings.

Rochester scored a run in the first, second and fourth innings before a two-run Gregorio Petit home run put the Red Wings up 5-0 in the fifth inning. Rogers would go on to give up a run in both the sixth and seventh innings as well before exiting after getting LaMonte Wade to ground out to second to end the seventh.

“I mean, they got some ground balls that found some holes early, and obviously that two-run homer there, I think it was in the (fifth), that hurt,” Rogers said. “It just kind of didn’t go my way. Like I had that outing earlier in the year, I think it was 13 hits again. I mean, I gave up 10 singles tonight, two homers and a double. I didn’t walk anybody tonight so that helped a little bit.”

The one area that might haunt Rogers the most could be the number of two-out RBI he let Rochester get off him.

Four of the seven runs scored against Rogers came with two outs.

“I look at some of those innings and I’m like, ‘Dang, how? Could I have made one more better pitch to leave that runner stranded at second,” Rogers said. “Just an unfortunate night.”

“That stuff is demoralizing for one and you just can’t let it happen over and over again,” Mitchell added. “I think on the year we have not been good with two outs and men in scoring position. We just haven’t for some reason. I’m not sure exactly what it is, but we haven’t. Not just Rogers. A lot of the pitchers seem to have trouble getting outs in that situation.”

Sanchez rehabbing Sunday

New York Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez is nearing his return.

Sanchez, who has been on the 10-day disabled list with a right groin strain since June 25, is expected to join the RailRiders on Saturday and play his first rehab game with the team on Sunday. He’s scheduled to play seven innings on Sunday before travelling with the team to Toledo.

“Yeah, he will (travel). All the way through Toledo, so far,” Mitchell said of Sanchez.
