Connor Wagman and Jaden Shedlock combined to strike out 13 as Mountain Top defeated Back Mountain 2-0 Wednesday in the winners bracket final of the Section 5 Little League 8-10 Baseball tournament at the Mountain Top Little League.
Mountain Top will go for the title at 6 p.m. Friday. It will play the winner of Thursday’s elimination game between Back Mountain and Abington American. Abington American eliminated Green Ridge 16-6.
Wagman pitched 4.2 innings with nine strikeouts, leaving with the game scoreless. Shedlock fanned all four batters he faced for the victory.
Mountain Top’s Zach Stavich snapped the 0-0 tie with an RBI single in the top of the sixth. Shedlock and Chase Galella also had hits. Wagman finished 2-for-3 at the plate.
Back Mountain’s Dominick Zangardi pitched a complete game with 12 strikeouts. He was 1-for-3.
Back Mountain 11, Carbondale 9
Mitch Burgess was 4-for-5 as Back Mountain defeated Carbondale in the opening round of the tournament. Back Mountain will play Abington at 6 p.m. Thursday at Hilldale Park in Plains.
Jacob Seymour and Gary Weaver had two hits each for Back Mountain. Weaver took over on the mound in the sixth and finished the game to pick up the win.
Vince DePalma had three hits for Carbondale, which played Pittston at 3 p.m. Thursday at Hilldale. Pittston lost 14-2 to Abington in the other first-round game.
Back Mountain 8, Avon Grove 4
Kirsten Finarelli drove in three runs as Back Mountain advanced to the winners bracket final, where it will play South Williamsport at 8 p.m. Thursday at Christy Mathewson Little League in Fleetville.
Carolyn Comitz added three hits for Back Mountain. Pitcher Nina Barrouk was strong in the circle once again, recording 10 strikeouts.
