Trailing by two runs heading to the bottom of the sixth, Pittston Area responded with six runs in the inning to earn a 12-8 win over Carbondale on Thursday to stay alive in the Section 5 Little League Junior Baseball tournament.
Down 8-6 at the start of the frame, Eric Pisack came through for Pittston Area with a three-run double and Ethan Clarke had a crucial hit and scored a run as Pittston Area took the lead. Alex Hoban doubled and scored three times while Nick Cerasaro added two hits, an RBI and a run while picking up the win in relief.
Thomas Gray had two hits and scored twice for Carbondale while Javier Rivera contributed two hits and a run while also standing out for his defensive play in the outfield. Nathan Shaw chipped in with a hit and a run.
Pittston Area and Back Mountain will meet in the elimination bracket at 5:45 p.m. Friday at Hilldale Park. Back Mountain lost 19-3 to Abington in the second game on Thursday.
Abington American 14, Back Mountain National 4
Back Mountain National’s run came to an end at sectionals as the District 31 champs lost in the elimination bracket.
Abington American advanced to the final round, needing to defeat District 16 champion Mountain Top twice. Mountain Top can win the title on Friday when the teams meet at 6 p.m. at Mountain Top’s home field.
An Abington American win on Friday would force a decisive game at 1 p.m. Saturday.
South Williamsport 3, Back Mountain 0
After winning in the first two rounds of the double-elimination state tournament, Back Mountain took its first loss to fall to the elimination bracket as South Williamsport claimed a spot in the championship round.
Back Mountain will await the winner of the Saint Mary’s-Delaware Valley game, which will be held at 6 p.m. Friday. The victor there will face Back Mountain at 6 p.m. Saturday, with the winner reaching the final round against South Williamsport on Sunday and, if necessary, Monday.
