Another Back Mountain team remains alive to win a state championship.

Back Mountain defeated Saint Mary’s 7-5 in the elimination bracket final of the Pennsylvania State Little League 8-10 softball tournament on Saturday at Christy Mathewson Little League in Fleetville.

With the win, Back Mountain advances to the championship round, where the team will need to beat South Williamsport twice to claim the state title.

The first game is scheduled for 6 p.m. Sunday. Should Back Mountain win, the two teams would face off again at noon on Monday for the crown.

Back Mountain is 3-1 in the tournament, with the lone loss coming 3-0 to South Williamsport in the winner’s bracket final.

West Point 4, Back Mountain National 2

Back Mountain National lost its state opener and dropped to the elimination bracket, where the team will look to stay alive on Sunday with a game against Lionville at noon Sunday at Bradford Regional Little League.

Also in action on Sunday will be the Back Mountain National major baseball squad, which continues on the fight to Williamsport with the opening round of the Pennsylvania State tournament at Berwick Little League. National will take on C-Side from Canonsburg Little League, which won its district and section title out of southwest Pennsylvania.

SECTION 5

JUNIOR BASEBALL

Abington 6, Pittston Area 0

Pittston Area’s run came to an end in the championship round of sectionals, losing by shutout to Abington. Pittston Area had previously won the District 16 championship to reach the next stage.

Abington finished the tournament a perfect 3-0, outscoring opponents 39-5 to advance to states.
