If you look closely at this large black bear photographed by Gregory Smith in Mountain Top, you’ll notice it’s fur is wet and muddy.

Why?

Well, Smith said he photographed the bear near Kirby Avenue on June 22 during a heat wave. The bear, Smith said, emerged from a creek near his house, and no doubt is was seeking some relief from the heat by wading in the water and rolling in the mud.

Smith said the bear was in no hurry as it strolled through his neighborhood. He’s also used to seeing bear in the area and noted that this one was exceptionally large.

And muddy.
