TUNKHANNOCK — The Nanticoke Area Trojans bounced back in dominant fashion after last week’s season-opening close loss to Pittston Area to take down the Tunkhannock Tigers 53-31 contest on Friday night.

Nanticoke Area’s big-play offense was the key to its impressive road triumph, as the Trojans amassed 511 yards, and scored three touchdowns each in the running game and passing attack.

The Trojans also added a punt return for a touchdown and a long fumble return from their defense that was taken all the way to the house.

The night opened up very promising for the Tigers as on their first play on offense sophomore quarterback Jack Chilson connected on a 52-yard pass to senior standout Garrett Hopkins. That big play set up a 16-yard scoring strike when Chilson connected with senior Zach Rogers just over a minute into the ball game.

However, that would be the last lead Tunkhannock would enjoy on the night.

Nanticoke Area came right back when junior signal caller Colby Butczynski threw a short pass to Darren Bosman, who broke several tackles and took it down the sidelines for an 80-yard touchdown with just under two minutes remaining in the first quarter to knot the game up a 7-7.

Butczynski later capitalized on a big Nanticoke Area fumble recovery and with just over two minutes into the second quarter as he barreled in for a 3-yard quarterback sneak for a 14-7 advantage. The Trojans would never look back and by halftime had a 40-21 lead.

Butczynski also had an impressive night throwing, hitting on 11-of-17 passes for 314 yards and three touchdowns.

The Trojans rushing attack was led by Joe Ammons who ran for a game-high 144 yards on 21 carries to go along with an 8-yard touchdown run that gave his team its final points of the night with just under two minutes to play in the third quarter. Keanu Ammons added five catches for 129 yards, including a 46-yard TD reception.

Tunkhannock’s offense was led by Hopkins, who ran the ball nine times for a 104 yards and a touchdown.
