SCRANTON — Kevin Williams waited patiently.

The West Scranton junior halfback carried just one time for a single yard in the first quarter while Nick Gioia’s passing was getting the Invaders out to a lead on visiting Pittston Area.

Williams took over for there, running for 225 yards and three second-half touchdowns to help the Invaders pull away for a 41-14 romp in the non-league meeting between likely District 2 Class 4A playoff football teams.

Pittston Area took the majority of its snaps in West Scranton territory, but was stopped on downs five times inside the Invaders 25.

Williams made sure West Scranton’s scoring opportunities were not wasted, producing all the second-half scores to break open what had been a one-touchdown game. He ran 4 and 2 yards for third-quarter scores, then sprinted 34 yards up the middle to close the scoring with 7:43 left.

Gioia, the quarterback, accounted for three first-half touchdowns while helping West Scranton to a 14-point lead before settling for a 21-14 advantage at the half.

The Invaders had the ball for just 1:37 of the first quarter but Gioia went 4-for-4 for 146 yards and two touchdowns during that time.

Quincy Vassell got behind the Pittston Area defense on West Scranton’s first play to pull in a 44-yard pass down the left sideline before stepping out of bounds. Vassell was even more open down the right side for a 70-yard touchdown later in the quarter.

Gioia also hit Vassell for a 17-yard score to end the first West Scranton possession and scrambled 9 yards to get to the flag for a touchdown on fourth-and-6 in the second quarter.

Pittston Area used a balanced attack to nearly keep pace with West Scranton in the first half.

After being unable to take advantage of Andrew Krawcyzk’s recovery of a muffed punt at the West Scranton 23, Pittston Area drove for a score late in the first quarter.

The Patriots converted third-and-14 – with the help of a penalty – and fourth-and-6 as part of an 11-play, 70-yard drive. Mike Nocito went 5-for-5 for 43 yards on the scoring drive, using four different receivers, including Bryan Giambra for the fourth-down conversion and Mike Coe for the 6-yard touchdown on the next play.

Fair catch interference on a punt set up Pittston Area at the West Scranton 32 in the last two minutes of the half.

Nocito hit two short passes, then Dylan Lukachko went off right tackle before cutting back to complete a 20-yard touchdown run.

Both teams come out of the game with 3-3 records.
