WRIGHT TWP. — Crestwood crowned its Homecoming king and queen prior to its football game with Nanticoke Area.

But make no mistake. Nanticoke Area running back Joe Ammons reigned supreme Saturday night.

Ammons rushed for 374 yards and five touchdowns on 26 carries as Nanticoke Area walloped Crestwood, 47-14, in a Wyoming Valley Conference Division 4A game.

“I never had one like this,” Ammons said. “But it was an honor to come out here and take my team to the win.”

Ammons got rolling on his third carry of the game, making a juke just beyond the line of scrimmage and then a dash to finish off a 94-yard TD run. He later added a 67-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and capped off the half with a 1-yard TD run. He ended the first half with 300 rushing yards.

Add in a 10-yard TD run and 70-yard TD catch by Keanu Ammons, and Nanticoke Area took a 33-14 lead into halftime. What made the outburst even more impressive was the Trojans had scored just three touchdowns in their last three games combined.

“I think that caused a big change,” Joe Ammons said of his 94-yard score, “because we all came together as a team and we all clicked.”

Joe Ammon added 74 more rushing yards and two touchdowns in the second half before taking a seat with a little more than eight minutes left in the game.

When he wasn’t hurting Crestwood, the Comets were hurting themselves. They turned over the ball four times, with Nanticoke Area’s Trevor Grohowski, Dylan Szychowski and Colin Seigel all picking off passes.

Then there were the penalties. Crestwood was flagged 20 times for 130 yards.

The combination of touchdowns, penalties (Nanticoke Area had 13 of them) and the Trojans’ inability to get to the 35-point mercy rule caused the game to last just 15 minutes shy of three hours.

Crestwood actually struck first as Garrett Swank hauled in a short pass from Chase Passman, picked up a block from fellow receiver Brandon Nieminski and scored on an 18-yard reception three minutes into the game.

Nanticoke Area, though, came back with four consecutive touchdowns to take control.
