Hazleton Area put up some big numbers on offense this fall. Berwick excelled in preventing them.
On Thursday, three players from those Wyoming Valley Conference schools were honored by being named all-state selections, voted on by football writers throughout Pennsylvania.
A pair of Hazleton Area seniors — running back Damon Horton and wide receiver Jacob Hunsinger — made the Class 6A team while Berwick junior Teagan Wilk made it to the Class 4A squad as a defensive back.
The lists for the 6A, 4A and 2A teams were announced Thursday with 5A, 3A and A coming Friday.
Hazleton Area averaged over 35 points per game in the regular season in 2018, good for second in the WVC and especially impressive given a difficult schedule. Horton and Hunsinger were key cogs in the attack.
The 5-foot-10, 200-pound Horton was the Times Leader Player of the Year as he led the entire conference in touchdowns, scoring 24 times while racking up 1,730 total yards as a rusher and receiver. And that’s despite battling a shoulder injury that caused to him miss time throughout the year.
Hunsinger was far and away the most productive receiver in all of the WVC, finishing first in receptions (46), receiving yards (891) and touchdown catches (10). At 6-foot-1, 185 pounds, he was also a force on special teams and defense, scoring on two kick returns and one fumble return while recording three interceptions.
After losing multiple games by one or two points early in the season, the Cougars finished with three straight wins to reach the postseason where they avenged a loss to Williamsport to reach the District 2/4 Class 6A title game.
In Class 4A, Berwick’s defense allowed just 140 points all season (11.7 ppg), pitching three shutouts and also holding Dallas scoreless in regulation of the Class 4A semifinals. And Wilk was a huge part of it.
The 5-foot-11, 180-pound Wilk made opposing quarterback pay all year long, picking off seven passes, including one he returned for a touchdown.
A two-time Times Leader all-star, Wilk also led the Dawgs with 68 tackles. He was the team’s top receiver and added six more touchdowns on offense while topping 400 yards from scrimmage.
Elsewhere in District 2, a trio of Valley View seniors in running back Mason Kordish, linebacker Traon Jones and defensive back Jaden Duplessis were named to the Class 4A team.
In addition, the two high school seniors who signed with Penn State last week — North Allegheny’s Joey Porter Jr. and State College’s Keaton Ellis — were named all-state defensive backs in Class 6A.
St. Joseph Prep quarterback Kyle McCord (6A), Erie Cathedral Prep running back Billy Lucas (4A) and Southern Columbia wide receiver Julian Fleming (2A) — the nation’s top rated receiver recruit for the 2020 class — were voted as Player of the Year in their respective classes.
Harrisburg’s Calvin Everett (6A), Cathedral Prep’s Mike Mischler (4A) and Wilmington’s Brandon Phillian (2A) all won Coach of the Year honors.
