Local Roundup: Wyoming Area rallies to defeat Coughlin in baseball

Wyoming Area rallied with three runs in the bottom of the seventh to defeat Coughlin 7-6 Tuesday in Wyoming Valley Conference baseball.

Coughlin trailed 4-2 entering the seventh, but scored four times to take the lead.

Seth Kopzca pitched well for the Warriors, allowing two runs through five innings. JJ Hood earned the win after pitching the final two outs of the seventh inning. Dan Weidl led the Wyoming Area offense, going 2-for-2 with a triple, two RBI, two runs scored and two walks.

Darren Clarke went 3-for-4 for Coughlin, driving in two runs and scoring a run.

Pittston Area 11, Tunkhannock 1 (5 inn.)

Pittston Area defeated the Tigers in five innings thanks to big performances from Derek Cunius and Hunter Ralston.

Cunius went 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and two RBI. Ralston tossed five innings of one-run baseball.

Tyler Faux went 2-for-3 for Tunkhannock with a double and a run scored.

Wyoming Valley West 4, Nanticoke Area 2

The Spartans and pitcher Nate Baranski recovered after allowing two runs in the first inning to defeat Nanticoke Area.

Baranski not only threw all seven innings to earn the win on the mound, but he scored the tying run in the fifth and the go-ahead run in the seventh on a home run.

Colby Butczynski pitched the first six innings for the Trojans, allowing to runs, one earned, on two hits and one walk. Devland Heffron came on for the seventh, allowing two runs, one earned.

Holy Redeemer 13, MMI Prep 1 (5 inn.)

The Preppers struck for a run in the first, but Holy Redeemer scored the next 13.

Frankie Desiderio allowed three hits over five innings for the Royals while picking up the win.

Jacob Roguskie led the Holy Redeemer offense by going 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI.

H.S. GIRLS LACROSSE

Crestwood 15, Pittston Area 4

The Comets had seven-point games from Emily Roberts and Kelsey Kulak en route to victory over Pittston Area.

Roberts scored five goals and had two assists. Kulak had two goals and five assists. Avery Bogdon made four saves for Crestwood.

Emily O’Brien scored twice for the Patriots and Brooklyn Pedana stopped 12 Crestwood shots.

H.S. BOYS TENNIS

Dallas 5, Wyoming Valley West 0

Dallas defeated Wyoming Valley West by sweeping all of the events.

John Toussaint, Alex DeRome and Dom Rizzo won their singles matches without losing a game in each set.

The doubles duos Danny Dudick/Dan Flynn and Bobbie Lauer/Caleb Waslick also won their matches in two sets .

H.S. BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Lake-Lehman 3, Coughlin 0

The Black Knights swept Coughlin in three sets 25-9, 25-13, 25-22.

Josh Company had 15 service points for Lake-Lehman while Jon Raspen had eight kills and Sam Price had 12 digs.

Wyoming Valley West 3, Hanover Area

Wyoming Valley West defeated the Hawks in three sets 25-14, 25-12, 25-14.

Dave Luff led the Spartans with 16 service points, three aces, eight kills and two blocks. Matt Giza also contributed 19 assists, five service points and three kills.

Joseph Scudder led Hanover Area with seven assists and 10 service points.

H.S. BOYS TRACK

Wyoming Area 78, Meyers 72

The Warriors won the battle between the the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 unbeaten teams by defeating Meyers.

Jevani Sancho led Wyoming Area by placing first in the 200 dash and 100 dash. He also helped the Warriors place first in the 400 relay.

Najese Hood contributed to the Mohawks cause by placing first in the triple jump and long jump.

Hanover Area 98, Northwest 46

The Hawks defeated Northwest thanks to 10 first-place finishes.

Asad Whithead had two of those for Hanover Area in the pole vault and triple jump.

Matt Saxe had two first-place finishes for the Rangers in the high jump and javelin.

Lake-Lehman 105, GAR 40

Daymond Kovaly and Casey Kaminski helped Lake-Lehman defeat GAR.

Kovaly finished in first place for the 110 high hurdles and the 300 hurdles. Kaminski picked up first-place finishes in the high jump and javelin.

Starmel Haskins was a bright spot for the Grenadiers, placing first in the 100 dash and 200 dash.

H.S. GIRLS TRACK

Wyoming Area 117, Meyers 27

Wyoming Area defeated the Mohawks by placing first in 14 events.

Valerie Gerchak placed first in the triple jump, long jump and helped win the 400 relay. She also placed second in the high jump.

Hanover Area 82.5, Northwest 66.5

Hanover Area placed first in 11 events en route to victory over the Rangers.

Tanisha Atherton helped the Hawks by placing first in the discus and javelin events.

Arianna Walker placed first in the 300 hurdles and long jump for Northwest.

Lake-Lehman 108, GAR 58

Lake-Lehman placed first in 14 events while defeating GAR.

Lizzy Blaski placed in first in the 110 hurdles and the 300 hurdles to help the Black Knights.

SOFTBALL

King’s sweeps Keystone

The Monarchs swept a doubleheader with Keystone, winning 6-2 and 8-4.

Nicole Kirse pitched game one for King’s, allowing two runs on just six hits. She also struck out four. Mackenzie Yori provided the offense with a pair of RBI.

In game two, the Monarchs prevailed despite bad weather. Gianna Marsico pitched 5.1 innings, allowing eight hits.
