WILKES-BARRE — Being in the driver’s seat is a new feeling for the Hanover Area softball team after years of chasing Holy Redeemer.

However, it isn’t always comfortable ride. Monday was a prime example and Tuesday most likely offers more potholes to navigate.

Hanover Area scored two runs in the eighth inning to squeeze past Redeemer 5-3 in a Wyoming Valley Conference Division 3 game.

Hanover Area (9-0 Div. 3, 12-1 overall) remained atop the division by defeating the six-time divisional champion. The loss probably means Redeemer (5-4 Div. 3, 5-5) will see its divisional reign end.

The Hawkeyes won’t have much time to enjoy the win. They head to Wyoming Seminary (8-1 Div. 3, 11-3) today for a game that was rained out April 15.

“We’re definitely taking it one game at a time,” Hanover Area coach Kathy Healey said. “Redeemer has set the bar for everybody around here to play well, so for us to beat them that’s two big wins for our program. But it’s really only one more game. We’ve won 12 games, but we didn’t win anything yet.”

Hanover Area had to overcome a couple baserunning blunders, including a double steal attempt with two outs in the seventh that saw a runner thrown out at home. Healey said she didn’t call for the double steal with runners on the corners.

Had the double steal attempt not happened, Hanover Area might have won without the extra inning. Emilee Bobos led off the eighth with a towering double to the right-field fence, a hit that would have probably scored two in the seventh. Lindsey Mendygral, though, pushed across Bobos with a single to center. Mollie Corbett singled Mendygral to third. Menydgral then beat a throw home on Riley Corbett’s grounder for a 5-3 lead.

Hanover Area led 2-0 after the first inning on an RBI triple by Sara Tuzinski and an RBI double by Bobos. Sarah Whitesell hit a bases-loaded sac fly with no outs in the second for a 3-0 advantage. But a baserunning mistake ended the chances for a bigger inning.

Redeemer got a run back in the second when Jenna Santuk hit a two-out single and later scored on Olivia Murray’s base hit.

The Royals tied the score 3-3 in the fifth. McKenna Dolan singled with one out and an error allowed her to get to third. She then scored on a wild pitch. Senior Allyson Laiuvara later blasted a home run to center for Redeemer’s final run. Laiuvara singled in the eighth with one out and stole second, but was stranded there.

“We’re getting better and better,” said Redeemer coach Jerry Paulukonis, who lost some key piece to a team that played for the PIAA Class 3A state championship last year. “We’re prepping to peak, hopefully, at the right time.”

Tunkhannock 13, Coughlin 0 (5 inn.)

Three pitchers combined on a five-inning no-hitter for Tunkhannock (7-1 Div. 2, 9-4).

Hope Jones pitched the first two innings, striking out five. Emily Schultz struck out two in the third inning, and Kendra Schultz finished off the no-hitter with five strikeouts in the last two innings.

Kendra Schultz was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Erin Dunn was 2-for-2 with three RBI. Faith Jones, Lexi Fortney, Jena Simmons and Nicole Howell had two RBI apiece.

Coughlin fell to 0-8 in Division 1 and 1-12 overall.

Wyoming Seminary 15, MMI Prep 2 (5 inn.)

Wyoming Seminary (8-1, Div. 3, 11-3) used a nine-run fourth inning to end the game via the 10-run rule.

Aubrey Mytych paced the offense, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI. Campbell Kelley was 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBI. Tiana Wren and winning pitcher Delaney Romanchick each had two RBI.

Irene Altmiller and Alexis Dalesandro each had a triple for MMI (1-8 Div. 3, 4-8).

Meyers 11, GAR 10 (9 inn.)

The final meeting between the Wilkes-Barre city rivals turned out to be a slugfest as the teams combined for 34 hits.

Abbi Sattof homered and knocked in five runs for Meyers (2-8 Div. 3, 2-9). Lael Walker had three hits, including a triple.

Sara Youkoski had three hits and three RBI to pace GAR (1-7 Div. 3, 2-9).

Lake-Lehman 4, Northwest 0

Krista Scoblick struck out 13 and allowed five hits as Lake-Lehman defeated Northwest.

Emily Smith doubled and knocked in two runs for Lehman (5-4 Div. 3, 6-7). Hailey Evans added two hits.

Northwest fell to 5-4 in Division 3 and 8-6 overall.

Pittston Area 11, Valley View 4

Pittston Area’s Alexa McHugh struck out 11 and helped her cause at the plate with three RBI, a homer and a double.

Madisyn Antal added a homer and three RBI as Pittston improved to 12-1 with the non-conference victory. Lexi Felinski was 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Gabby Para was 2-for-5 with a double and scored twice.
