The Misericordia baseball team opened the MAC Freedom tournament with a 6-1 win over local rival King’s on Friday at Owls Field in West Lawn.

Ian McCole improved his record to 9-1 on the year. He tossed eight innings, allowed one run and struck out seven.

Shane Hughes led the Cougars offense, going 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored. Tyler Holzapfel also drove in two runs while going 1-for-4 with a triple.

Matt Mellinger went 3-for-3 with a walk and a run scored to lead the Monarchs.

Misericordia advances in the winners bracket and will play DeSales at 11 a.m. Saturday. King’s will play Manhattanville in an elimination game at 3 p.m.

SOFTBALL

Cougars split at MAC tourney

Misericordia opened the MAC Freedom tournament with a 4-0 win over Wilkes. Kiersten Pflueger led the Cougars on offense with a big day, going 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI.

Brooke Moyle pitched a shutout for Misericordia, allowing just five hits through all seven innings.

Jordyn Kondras was a bright spot for the Colonels, going 2-for-3 with a double.

The Cougars missed an opportunity to advance to the championship round, falling 6-1 to top seeded Manhattanville. Taylor Baloga drove in the Cougars only run with a pinch-hit RBI double.

Misericordia will play Wilkes in an elimination game on Saturday.

Wilkes 2, DeSales 1

Wilkes kept its MAC Freedom title hopes alive with a win over DeSales in the first elimination game of the MAC Freedom tournament.

Celine Podlesney and Rhiannon Aurand combined to hold the Bulldogs to one run on seven hits over seven innings. Aurand also had Wilkes’ only RBI with the go-ahead single in the sixth.

Gab Giordano manufactured the Colonels first run by stealing third and scoring on a throwing error.

BASEBALL

Meyers 9, MMI Prep 2

The Mohawks defeated MMI Prep behind Denysh Polanco’s performance on the mound and Luke Bottger’s day at the plate. Polanco earned the win, tossing five innings and allowing just two runs. Bottger went 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBI and two runs scored.

Kevin McNulty led the Preppers by going 2-for-2 with an RBI.

Wyoming Seminary 12, GAR 3

Will Youngman went six innings, allowed two runs on five hits while striking out nine for the Blue Knights. Todd Phillips led the Wyoming Seminary offense by going 2-for-3 with three runs scored, two doubles and two RBI.

Sharyel Colomna led the Grenadiers offense, going 2-for-3 with a run scored.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Wyoming Seminary 15, Hazleton Area 1

Mya Pyke and Ashley Metz led the Blue Knights with four points each. Both scored three goals and added an assist.

Olivia Wills scored the lone goal for the Cougars.

BOYS LACROSSE

Wyoming Area 11, North Pocono 8

Wyoming Area defeated North Pocono behind Dominic Deluca’s nine-point game. He finished with five goals and four assists. FJ Braccini also recorded four points on three goals and one assist.

Lakeland 9, Lake-Lehman 2

Marshall Woodrosky and Bryce Burgit led Lakeland past the Black Knights.

Alex Snook and Nat McAllister each scored for Lake-Lehman.

Scranton Prep 14, Tunkhannock 5

Sergey Montross led Tunkhannock with two goals in the loss. Iziah Simon and Jaxson Montross each added a goal, and Trae Cole scored a goal and picked up and assist.
