KINGSTON — A no-hitter would have been nice, but it wasn’t the main goal for Wyoming Seminary on Tuesday.

The task was not a repeat of what happened against Lake-Lehman nearly a month ago.

Thanks to a quick start and a one-hitter by Delaney Romanchick, the Blue Knights avenged their only divisional loss with an 8-1 thumping of Lehman in a Wyoming Valley Conference Division 3 softball game.

Romanchick was within an out of a no-hitter when Lehman’s Emily Smith hit a liner in the right-center gap. Since there is no outfield fence, the ball bounced far enough on the artificial turf for Smith to circle the bases.

“I knew I shouldn’t have given in to the hitter with a full count,” Seminary coach Steve Mytych said. “I should have stuck to what the game plan was. Naturally, my instincts and to where the team has gone from where we were, 2-12, to where we are today is by just by being aggressive and attacking teams and hitters.

“That one hit is on me, but that’s not our goal to get no-hitters. It’s to compete for a district title and play at states.”

And play for the WVC Division 3 title, which could be on the line Thursday when Seminary (11-1 Div. 3, 15-3) hosts Hanover Area (11-1 Div. 3, 14-3).

Had Seminary not lost 7-4 on April 11 to Lehman (5-6 Div. 3, 6-9), it would have some wiggle room going into Thursday’s showdown. Mytych jokingly pinned the loss on his dad, who ran the team in his absence.

Lehman has very little margin for error heading into its final five games. The top eight teams are guaranteed spots in the District 2 Class 4A playoffs, and the Black Knights were parked in 10th entering play Tuesday. Any teams outside the top eight get in by finishing at least .500, so that would mean winning four out of those five games.

Seminary established itself early Tuesday as an RBI single by Campbell Kelly and an RBI double by Romanchick led to a 2-0 advantage after one inning.

Things went haywire for Lehman in the fourth as Seminary scored three more runs, two on a sac fly by Emma Bean where one run scored on a throwing error. Halle Kehl added an RBI double in the fifth and Akira Kopec brought home a run with a single in the sixth.

Romanchick, who took a no-hitter into the seventh in a 1-0 loss to Hanover Area last Tuesday, struck out 12 and allowed just two Lehman batters to reach base prior to Smith’s homer. Hunter Kline walked with two outs in the third and Hailey Evans did the same in the fourth.

Northwest 12, MMI Prep 2 (6 inn.)

Trista Babcock hit for the cycle and Brenna Babcock also homered as Northwest defeated MMI Prep.

Alaina Carle and Amanda Cheslaw added three RBI each for the Rangers (7-5 Div. 3, 11-7).

MMI Prep fell to 1-11 in Division 3 and 4-12 overall.

Tunkhannock 7, Nanticoke Area 2

Hope Jones recorded her 300th career strikeout and hit a homer run as Tunkhannock (10-1 Div. 2, 13-4) clinched at least a tie for the Division 2 title.

Jones also finished with two RBI. Faith Jones, her twin sister, was 3-for-4. Jena Simmons tripled and doubled, and Nicole Howell doubled.

Alison Kenner had an RBI and Olivia Nice doubled for Nanticoke Area (3-8 Div. 2, 3-13).

Hazleton Area 8, Wyoming Valley West 0

Marissa Trivelpiece and Julia Mrochko homered as Hazleton Area improved to 11-0 in Division 1 and 16-0 overall.

Trivelpiece also tripled and finished with four RBI. Mrochko had three RBI.

Julia Franks had two hits for Valley West (4-7 Div. 1, 5-7).

Hanover Area 7, GAR 5

Sarah Whitesell, Kasidy Slusser, Sara Tuzinski and Emilee Bobos each had two hits as Hanover Area (11-1 Div. 3, 14-3) escaped with a victory.

Sabrina Nunez doubled and scored twice for GAR (2-9 Div. 3, 3-12).

Pittston Area 5, Crestwood 0

Alexa McHugh tossed a two-hit shutout, striking out six without allowing a walk. At the plate, the Patriots got two hits apiece from Shayla Williams, Kaehler Kivler and Lexi Felinski.

Hannah Sobolewski had both hits for the Comets.
