The Wyoming Seminary boys tennis team is headed to Hershey this weekend in the hunt for a state championship.

The Blue Knights punched their ticket with a 3-0 win over Central Columbia in the PIAA Class 2A opening round on Tuesday in Williamsport.

Already District 2 Class 2A champions, the Knights advanced to the state quarterfinals, where they will play District 7 champion Indiana, which edged Mercyhurst Prep 3-2 on Tuesday. Seminary will face Indiana at 11 a.m. on Friday at Hershey Racquet Club, which is hosting the final three rounds of the tournament.

A win on Friday would put the Knights into a 9:30 a.m. semifinal matchup on Saturday, with the championship scheduled for 3:30 p.m. later that day.

SOFTBALL

Berwick 6, Hazleton Area 2

Emily Novicki homered, doubled and drove in five runs as Berwick handed Hazleton Area its first loss of the season and prevented the Cougars from clinching the WVC Division 1 championship.

Hazleton Area (11-1 Div. 1, 16-1) still has a chance at the title when it plays at Pittston Area (8-2 Div. 1, 14-2). However, the Patriots need to get past Dallas on Wednesday to have a shot at the division. They also play Wyoming Valley West on Friday.

Novicki finished 3-for-3. Berwick (5-8 Div. 2, 8-10) finished with six hits, with Peyton Lipsey getting two singles and Sarah Dent adding another. Lipsey scored three times.

Emma Stoker pitched 5.1 innings, allowing five hits, to pick up the win. Novicki threw the final 1.2 innings.

Olivia Wolk had a triple and double for Hazleton Area. Aleah Kost and Gianna Gombeda each had an RBI.

Wyoming Seminary 16, GAR 0 (3 inn.)

The Blue Knights (13-1 Div. 3, 17-3) jumped out with a 10-run first inning and went on to clinch the WVC Division 3 title. They become the first Division 3 champion other than Holy Redeemer since the WVC went to three divisions in 2013.

Tiana Wren and Campbell Kelly each hit grand slams for Seminary. Wren scored three runs. Delaney Romanchick pitched 2.2 innings, striking out six, to pick up the win.

Skylar Elmy had the only hit for GAR (2-11 Div. 3, 3-14).

Postponements

Rain once again caused issues Tuesday with the Wyoming Valley Conference baseball and softball schedules.

Three baseball games were moved to today: Pittston Area at Hazleton Area; Wyoming Valley West at Coughlin; and Tunkhannock at Nanticoke Area. Northwest at Crestwood will be played Thursday. Crestwood had a non-conference game at Scranton scheduled for that day, but it is now Friday. Also on Friday, Wyoming Area will travel to Dallas for an 11:30 a.m. game. The early start is because Wyoming Area has its prom Friday night.

Five softball games were shifted to Thursday: Coughlin at Crestwood; Tunkhannock at Dallas; Wyoming Area at Nanticoke Area; Meyers at Holy Redeemer; and Hanover Area at Northwest. Wyoming Valley West at Pittston Area will be 4:45 p.m. on Friday.

All other baseball and softball games start at 4:15 p.m.
